The promise of Father Camilo Bouillon
The French missionary Camille Bouillonnamed Im Camillo in Korea, he arrived in the country after his ordination and was destined for the former Catholic community of Bueongol. Looking for a more accessible place for the mission, he saw a great house and its land on Maesan hill. They belonged to Min Eung-sik, a relative of Empress Myeongseong, who had taken refuge there during the military crisis of 1882.
The memory of the sanctuary preserves the missionary's prayer: if Mary granted him that house and the mountain for the mission, he would be his humble servant and the Virgin of the Rosary would be patron of the new church. In May 1896 he was able to acquire the property and 7 October, the feast of the Rosary, established the parish. The Marian dedication was not added later: it was at the very origin of the place.
Of the primer oratorio at the iglesia de 1930
The community grew during the first decades of the 20th century. The current building, built in brick and completed in 1930, took as reference the Myeongdong Cathedral of Seoul. Its smaller and rural Gothic silhouette still dominates the Gamgok valley.
The former residence of Father Bouillon, one of the first stone buildings in the region, today houses the Maegoe Museum. It retains objects from the first community, documents and pieces used by the founder, and allows us to read the history of the sanctuary along with the wider history of Korean Catholicism.
The Virgin and the Korean War
During the Korean War the temple was occupied and used in the midst of the advance and withdrawal of the troops. Official tourism information shows that the compound also served as a shelter for local inhabitants. The tradition of the sanctuary preserves in a Marian image signs of shooting during the conflict.
The devotional account interprets the survival of the statue and the temple as maternal protection. Historically, the use of the place in war and the preservation of the marks are known; miraculous reading belongs to the memory of faith of the community and is presented here as a tradition, not as a formal declaration of a miracle.
Recognition as Marian Shrine
The Korean Church includes Gamgok- Maegoe among its official places of pilgrimage. The ecclesial proclamation as Marian sanctuary was held on October 7, recovering the founding date and the feast of the Rosary. Because of its antiquity and recognition it is often presented as the first Marian sanctuary officially established in Korea.
The pilgrims participate in the Eucharist, pray the rosary, visit the church, the museum and the Marian spaces of the compound. The advocation unites contemplative prayer with the memory of a community found in Mary shelter during times of persecution and war.
The name Maegoe
Maegoe is associated in the Korean Catholic use with the rose and the rosary. The expression recalls that each oatmeal can be offered as a spiritual rose. Therefore, translating the title only as "Virgin of Gamgok" would lose an essential part: it is the Virgin of the Rosary venerated in Gamgok in a linguistic and cultural form of Korea.
Location on the map
The church is at number 10 of Seongdang-gil, in Gamgok-myeon, Eumseong County. The verified coordinates of the building are 37.12184, 127.64096. The point corresponds to the historical temple of the hill, near the Maegoe schools, and not to the homonymous town of the province of Jeolla.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Rosary of Gamgok
Holy Mary of the Rosary, Mother who welcomed the promise of the first missionaries of Gamgok, protects those who seek refuge in you. Sana the wounds left by war, approach the divided peoples of the Korean peninsula and teach us to contemplate Christ in every mystery of the rosary. Our Lady of Gamgok- Maegoe, pray for us. Amen.
