Our Lady of the Janggye Rosary - Rural faith, welcome and dignity in Jangsu

Marian devotion

← Volver to Korea del Sur

Between the mountains and fields of Jangsu, the parish of Janggye keeps a memory that begins before its formal foundation. Communities of believers sought refuge in this region during the persecutions, and their descendants raised a church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary.

Marian patronage is official

The Episcopal Conference of Korea records The Lord's Prayersthe Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary, as patron of Janggye. The episcopal record also confirms the date of foundation and the home.

The title has not been deducted from an occasional celebration. It is the proper vocation of the parish and is also documented in the history published by the diocese of Jeonju.

Precision: Janggye is not documented as a place of Marian apparition or as a sanctuary. It is a rural parish dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.

Mary and the contemplation of the Gospel

The Rosary walks through the mysteries of Christ with the look of Mary. The repetition of the avemary creates a rhythm to contemplate the Incarnation, public life, Passion and glory of the Lord.

It's not a magic formula or an accumulation of words. Its meaning appears when it leads to listening to the Gospel, becoming and serving.

A prayer to walk together

In rural communities, the Rosary has been able to pray in homes, roads, small chapels and neighborhood meetings. It does not require extensive books or large buildings, and can be transmitted between generations.

Leo XIII promoted this prayer as a help for the Church and for the needs of society. His fertility is not to flee the world, but to learn to look at it from the mysteries of Christ.

Roots before the parish

Janggye was erected in 1954, but the Catholic history of Jangsu is much older. The diocese recalls communities established in places where believing families took refuge during the persecutions.

Before 1900 there were numerous missionary stations in the region. This network allowed the preservation of faith in mountain villages and prepared the human land from which the parish would emerge.

From the old communities to Janggye

The communities of Jangsu Subun-ri and Jangsu-eup are part of the pastoral genealogy of Janggye. In 1953 a committee was organized to prepare the new church and a traditional twenty-bedroom house and land were acquired.

The canonical foundation took place on 19 May 1954. The date distinguishes the institutional birth of a community whose believing memory came from previous generations.

Construction and dedication of the temple

After expanding the parish land, the works began in March 1958. The church was dedicated to 30 October 1958 under the title of Our Lady of the Rosary.

A later memory recalls that the building was raised with help materials arrived after the Korean War. The temple thus belongs to the time of reconstruction of a deeply wounded country.

The Rosary after the war

In a community rebuilt after the conflict, contemplating the painful mysteries was not an abstraction. Families and villages knew loss, displacement and poverty.

The glorious mysteries proclaimed that suffering does not have the last word, but without denying the wounds or turning hope into oblivion.

A clinic for the rural population

On June 10, 1959, the parish opened the Maegoe clinic, whose Korean name refers to the Rosary. It was later called Our Lady's Hospital and provided health care until its closure in late 1990.

This work shows how Marian patronage acquired a practical form: caring for specific bodies in a region where access to medical services could be difficult.

Health, dignity and limits

Religious care does not replace professional medicine. A Christian health work serves well when it respects the science, confidentiality, freedom and dignity of each patient.

To remember this clinic is also to recognize the work of those who served the population and the permanent need for accessible rural health.

Reception of abandoned children

At the end of 1985, the parish began to care for children with intellectual disabilities who had been abandoned by their families or society. The initiative subsequently continued in the House of the Sisters of Iksan.

Historical terminology must be read carefully, but the essential fact remains: especially vulnerable people found care and a path of institutional continuity.

Dignity does not depend on capacity

The Rosary contemplates Jesus welcomed as a child, vulnerable on the Cross and glorified by the Father. This contemplation contradicts any culture that measures human value by productivity, autonomy or prestige.

A Marian community is called to create real belonging, not distant compassion, for persons with disabilities and their families.

A memory linked to human rights

In 1985, during the authoritarian regime, the parish priest of Janggye was illegally abducted for about 15 hours by agents and left away from the community. He began a protest fast until the authorities submitted a formal apology.

This episode belongs to the documented history of defending the truth and the memory of Gwangju's democratic movement. It must be precisely told, without turning the entire parish into a political label.

The Rosary is not silence before injustice

Mary proclaims in the Magnificat that God looks at the humble and knocks down the false great. True prayer does not justify abuse or force victims to shut up.

Reconciliation needs truth, responsibility and protection of human rights. Forgiving does not mean denying the facts.

Digital education for older people and migrants

Since 2003, the parish has offered free computer courses for neighbors, not just for their parishioners. The participants included the elderly, migrant women and workers who learned documents, the Internet and e-mail.

The institution was recognized as a digital literacy centre and had 12 computers. A 77-year-old neighbor explained that he wanted to learn to send messages to his grandchildren.

Reduce a new form of isolation

Digital literacy may seem far from Marian devotion, but it responds to a human need: to communicate, to access information and not to be excluded by age or origin.

Listening to the needs of the neighborhood and sharing knowledge is a concrete way to live the mysteries of service envisaged in the Rosary.

The Scripture studied in community

In 2006, twenty-four members received recognition for completing biblical reading itineraries: eighteen had studied the Old and New Testament for two years, and six completed the New.

Then they shared food with the community. The studied Word did not end in a diploma; it led to a common table.

Agriculture, return to the field and care for creation

The diocese described families who returned to the countryside and integrated into the local branch of the rural Catholic movement. They produced eggs, fruit and vegetables through ecological practices.

Rural life must not be idealized: it requires work, access to services and economic sustainability. The community can accompany those who choose this path and promote links between newcomers and old neighbours.

Reception of new parishioners

A diocesan chronicle highlighted the tradition of receiving with warmth new believers and families transferred to the area. This hospitality helps the parish not be closed on ancient parentheses or memories.

Mary, who came to meet Isabel, inspires a community that is coming forward to receive the newcomer.

Floods and rural fragility

The intense rains of August 2005 damaged homes, farms and parishioners of Janggye and other communities of the diocese. A farm lost much of its animals and a house was destroyed.

To remember these losses invites you to join prayer, prevention, solidarity and environmental care. It is not appropriate to attribute a specific catastrophe to the sin of its victims.

Seventy years of community

In 2024 Janggye commemorated his seventy years along with the holding of confirmations. The ephemeride linked the heritage of the ancient communities, the post-war temple and the new generations.

A Christian anniversary is not just a numerical count. It is thanksgiving, awareness-raising and renewed commitment to the territory.

verified location for the map

The Episcopal Conference places the temple in 111 Handeul@@. Mapping by the Korean name and the municipality returns 35.7317806, 127.5842235, coinciding with the parish compound.

The marker has not been located in the generic centre of Jangsu County or in one of the old rural communities mentioned in history.

No confundir Janggye y Jangsu

Janggye is a town and parish in Jangsu County. Jangsu also gives name to another parish. The episcopal file, the address and the coordinates confirm that this page corresponds to Janggye Catholic Church.

To visit and pray

Janggye is an active parish. It is appropriate to confirm hours before travelling, respect the celebrations and ask for permission before photographing people or activities.

One can be offered for farmers and rural populations, one for older persons and migrants, one for those living with disabilities and another for truth and human rights.

Prayer to Our Lady of the Rosary of Janggye

Our Lady of the Rosary, guards the parish of Janggye and the villages of Jangsu. It retains the memory of those who protected the faith in difficult times and accompanies farmers, older people, migrants, the sick and persons with disabilities. Teach us to contemplate Christ, to defend human dignity and to share the Word and bread. Amen.
