Marian devotion
The Janghanpyeong parish had to celebrate in rented premises, a collective house, a basement and even a tent before having a stable temple. It is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary, a prayer that teaches precisely to persevere, listen and return to the Gospel again and again.

The Episcopal Conference of Korea records by aaaparis · Published 01/04/2016 · Last modified 01/04/2016the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary, as patron of Janghanpyeong. The directory also confirms date, address and jurisdiction.
The title belongs to the official identity of the parish, not to an apparition or an added interpretation for this page.
The Rosary as a contemplation of Christ
St. John Paul II defined the Rosary as a prayer of deeply Christological orientation. With Mary, the mysteries of the Incarnation, the public life, the Passion and the glory of Jesus are covered.
The repetition of the avemary does not place prayer in Mary. It provides a serene rhythm to look at Christ and let his Gospel transform memory, affections and decisions.
Repeating is not talking without listening
The Rosary can pray mechanically, but its deepest form includes silence and listening. After announcing every mystery, it is appropriate to allow the evangelical scene to question life.
A community dedicated to the Rosary is called to learn that same movement: to speak before God, to hear His Word and to listen to others.
Foundation in September 2005
The archdiocese of Seoul erected Janghanpyeong the 22 September 2005. The community separated from Jangan- dong and also brought together faithful from sectors related to Dapsimni.
The initial data preserved by the parish speak of fifteen areas, seventy-three small communities and more than two thousand faithful. He was born, therefore, with a significant population but without a final building.
First rented spaces
While preparing a church of its own, the parish celebrated in other buildings and used a set of houses acquired as a provisional temple.
The solution seemed to allow a transition, but the land was affected by a process of urban renewal. Planning, ownership and urban restrictions became pastoral and legal problems.
Demolition and tent
The provisional temple was finally forcibly demolished in the midst of disputes over promotion and compensation. For a while, the parishioners held in a tent while protesting and demanding a solution.
This stage should not be broken. The precariousness, conflict and uncertainty produced real wear and pain.
When a work divides the community
Economic and urban difficulties created mistrust, misunderstandings and clashes. Some people went away and the pastoral council came to be dissolved.
A parish is not automatically protected from the conflict for its religious purpose. Transparency, accessible information, competent advice and real participation are essential.
Five transfers
Since the separation of Jangan- dong, the community has been through five locations. At different times he used commercial premises and underground spaces for the Eucharist and activities.
Each transfer involved adapting schedules, accesses, catechesis and coexistence. Continuity depended on people capable of transporting not only objects, but links and responsibilities.
Recuperar confiance
After the crisis, the parish promoted actions to rebuild relations: visits to those who had gone away, shared Lenten initiatives and cohabitation activities.
The recovery did not occur by concealing the conflict. He demanded to recognize wounds, meet again and build a common goal.
The first stone in 2013
After seven and a half years of roaming, Janghanpyeong celebrated the beginning of the works of his final temple during Easter 2013.
The news of the beginning had a special meaning for those who had prayed in basements and under canvas. He didn't erase the living, but he opened a stable stage.
Integrate the old and the new
The project reused a commercial building acquired by the parish, reforming it as an educational and service centre. In the back yard the new church was raised and both spaces were connected.
This solution combined memory and renewal: instead of abandoning all the above, the set incorporated what it could continue to serve.
20 years on the way
In 2025 the community celebrated its twenty years. The ephemeride allowed to contemplate the distance between the fragility of the beginning and the present parish life.
An anniversary should not turn history into a triumphant story. It also serves to remember mistakes, to thank for reconciliation and to improve mechanisms that prevent new conflicts.
From conflict to systematic listening
In 2026, the parish placed among its priorities the "conversation in the Spirit," a methodology of prayer, silence, word and listening promoted in the Church's synodal process.
All groups and areas were invited to practice it with common themes and their own issues. The experience was not reserved for the pastoral council.
Concrete preparation for listening
Before extending the practice, pastoral leaders and coordinators participated in experience sessions. Even sand watches were prepared to ensure clear intervention times.
This detail expresses a simple truth: good listening needs structure. Without limits, the safest voices can occupy all the space.
Talk from experience
The monthly themes linked faith and ordinary life: how the Christian identity is manifested, how it is prayed and with what criteria it is involved in the support of the community.
Spiritual conversation is not a debate to overcome or an immediate survey. Each person speaks from his experience, listens without preparing a replica and leaves a space of silence to discern.
The Rosary and the spiritual conversation
Rosario and community listening share rhythm, silence and attention. In both cases, the word repeated or shared needs to leave room for a presence that we do not control.
Mary keeps the events in her heart. A Marian parish can also learn to guard the word of the other without using it against him.
Listening does not eliminate responsibility
The dialogue does not make all statements equally true, nor does it replace standards, technical advice or decisions of authority. It helps to gather information, recognize impacts and discern with greater communion.
In matters of abuse, crime or security, listening requires activating protocols and protecting the victim, not just internal conversation.
A book to continue the process
The parish planned a guide with the method, monthly themes and practical questions, as well as groups to read the final document of the Synod.
Documenting a methodology favors continuity and prevents it from relying only on a person's enthusiasm.
Janghanpye or Jan-n-d
The parish is called Janghanpyeong, but its postal address is in Don't-dong. Similar forms such as Janghanpyeong and Janganpyeong, in addition to the administrative name Jangan, live together in this area of Seoul.
The subway station uses Janghanpyeong, while many agencies use Jangan. This toponymic variation does not mean that the church has changed the neighborhood.
An environment marked by mobility and work
The area is close to important avenues, public transport and the historic market of the Janganpyeong car. Housing, commerce and workshops live together in a dense urban fabric.
The parish can offer a meeting place for workers, families and elders whose daily rhythms do not always allow lasting links.
verified location for the map
The Episcopal Conference places the temple in 13 Janghan-ro 14-gil, Jan-n-nang-d, Dongdaemun-gu. Mapping by name and address returns 37.5665318, 127.0688153, a match to the compound.
The marker has not been placed at the metro station, located further south, or at the centre of the car market.
Do not confuse the name with the station
The Janghanpyeong station is on the border between Dongdaemun-gu and Seongdong-gu. The parish is located to the north, inside Jangan-dong.
Episcopal direction, parish code and coordinates resolve ambiguity.
To visit and pray
Janghanpyeong is an active parish. The hours can be changed and must be confirmed. During the celebrations you must remain silent and ask for permission before photographing people or meetings.
There can be a dozen divided communities, one by those who have lost their place of worship, one by neighborhood workers and another to learn to listen patiently.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Rosary of Janghanpyeong
Our Lady of the Rosary, guards the parish of Janghanpyeong and the neighborhoods of Dongdaemun. You who kept the Word in your heart, teach us to listen before you answer, to repair the hurt trust and to persevere when there is no assurance. Make every mystery of the Rosary a school of Gospel, reconciliation and service. Amen.
