A parish entrusted to the Rosary
The directory of the Korean Episcopal Conference expressly records the The Lord's PrayersThe Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary. The parish erection is located in May 1935.
The first parish priest was Harold W. Henry, a missionary of San Columbano, who would later be an apostolic vicar and archbishop of Gwangju. Between 1935 and 1942, he worked in Naju for evangelization, education and assistance.
The first Korean temple of the missionaries of San Columbano
The historical chronicle of the Archdiocese presents the temple of Naju as the first church built in Korea by the Missionary Society of San Columbano. Its longitudinal interior and windows inspired by the traditional Korean role retain a sober identity.
The whole was also restored a traditional house that had served for three years as the first Korean seat of the Sisters of Charity of Jesus. Today it retains a memory of the life of the first religious and of the charitable service attached to the parish.
Four martyrs remembered in Naju
The memorial chapel honors Peter Yi Chun- hwa, killed during the persecution of 1839, and Paul Kang Yeong- won, Andrew Yu Chi-seong and Paul Yu Mun-bo, victims of the persecution of the 19th century. Ecclesial sources document their names and the relationship of their deaths to the ancient garrison of Naju.
The chapel has the form of a tomb and is accompanied by elements coming from or linked to the traditional place of interrogation and executions. It does not replace the parish temple: it is part of the same enclosure as a place of memory and prayer.
The Rosary and the memory of the Passion
The Rosary allows us to contemplate the life of Christ from incarnation to glory, through the giving of the cross. In a place marked by martyrdom, painful mysteries acquire a particular closeness, but always lead to the resurrection.
Mary accompanies the persecuted Church as she accompanies her Son. His presence does not glorify violence; he supports fidelity, compassion and forgiveness when faith has a cost.
