Marian devotion
Within the Seoul Medical Veterans' Center there is a Catholic community placed under the patronage of Our Lady of the Seven Dolores. His presence in a hospital gives this old advocation a very concrete resonance: Mary remains with the suffering Christ and accompanies, without easy words, those who go through disease, rehabilitation, duel or uncertainty.

Qué exists realmente en este lugar
The official directory of the Catholic Church in Korea identifies the community with the Korean abbreviation Newswhich indicates his status as a quasi-parish. It is not an ordinary territorial parish or a sanctuary of apparitions, but a pastoral community linked to the hospital.
The same episcopal source records the Virgin of the Seven Dolores as the patron, points to the date of foundation, slogan 192 faithful and offers liturgical times. These data confirm a stable community life within a clinical environment, although figures and schedules may change.
The Veteran Medical Centre
The hospital is part of the Korean public system of care for veterans and provides specialized health services to persons recognized for their service to the country and to other patients. Its activity includes acute care, rehabilitation, long-term care and palliative accompaniment.
In this context, a Christian community does not take the place of doctors, nurses, therapists or psychologists. His own mission is sacramental, spiritual and fraternal: to listen, pray, accompany hope and help no one be reduced to a diagnosis.
An advocation next to the beds
The Virgin of the Dolores does not offer a superficial explanation of the suffering. The Gospels show Mary going through dismay, displacement, loss and death of her Son. His fidelity does not eliminate pain, but prevents pain from having the last word.
In a veteran hospital, this image can also talk about wounds that are not always seen: traumatic memories, acquired disability, aging, family separation or loneliness. Christian devotion must approach these realities with respect and without appropriating anyone's personal history.
Mary's seven pains
Christian piety contemplates seven evangelical moments in the painful path of the Mother of Jesus:
- The prophecy of Simeon, who proclaims the sword that will pass through his soul.
- He fled to Egypt to protect the Child.
- The loss of Jesus for three days in Jerusalem.
- The encounter with Jesus on the way to Calvary, received by devotional tradition.
- The permanence of Mary at the foot of the Cross.
- The reception of the body of Jesus descended from the Cross.
- The burial of his Son and waiting for her to be silent.
The Directory on popular piety and liturgy explains that this itinerary, known as Via Matrisfrom the prophecy of Simeon to the death and burial of Christ. Each season necessarily refers to Jesus and the Paschal mystery.
Mary at the foot of the Cross
The decisive scene is in John 19,25-27. Mary does not flee from Calvary; she remains with her Son and receives a new motherhood when Jesus entrusts the disciple to his care. The Catholic tradition sees in this gesture a maternal closeness to all the disciples of Christ.
Benedict XVI, celebrating Our Lady of the Dolores with sick and carers in Lourdes, recalled that Mary participated in the Passion through her compassion. The traditional image of the seven swords expresses the depth of that pain, but the Christian faith already looks at it in the joy of the Resurrection.
Pain, compassion and hope
The word "compassion" means suffering with the other. It is not to say that everything happens for a simple reason, nor to demand constant strength from the sick. Sometimes the most honest help is to be present, respect silence and allow the person to express fear, tiredness or anger.
Mary teaches a hope that does not deny reality. The Christian can ask for healing and at the same time accept medicine, clinical uncertainty and human limits. The resurrection of Christ sustains the ultimate hope, but does not allow to minimize present suffering.
Veterans, memory and reconciliation
The contemporary history of Korea is marked by occupation, war, division and separation of families. Those who served in conflict contexts can keep physical and moral wounds for decades. The believing community is called to honor the dignity of each person without turning pain into propaganda.
The Virgin Dolorosa invites the victims to be reminded, to take care of those who bear the consequences of violence and to ask for prudent ways of peace for the entire Korean peninsula. Reconciliation does not mean hiding the truth, but preventing inherited suffering from generating new wounds.
Palliative care and dignity
The Veterans' Medical Centre itself has palliative and hospitable care. At the end of life, accompanying means relieving symptoms, hearing desires, supporting the family and protecting the dignity of the person.
Spiritual assistance must be offered with consent and without pressure. No one must receive promises of healing, guilt for his illness or religious imposition. When a patient wants prayer or sacraments, the community can respond delicately and coordinate with the health team.
Those who care also need care
Families, caregivers and professionals may suffer from exhaustion, early mourning or a feeling of impotence. Mary, who remained by the Cross without being able to avoid it, offers an image of faithful presence that does not require control of the uncontrollable.
A responsible hospital pastoral also knows how to derive. Listening does not make the companion a doctor or psychologist; recognizing the limits themselves is a form of charity. Caregiver care helps prevent abandonment, wear and decisions made in solitude.
The Rosary in the time of sickness
The Rosary can pray slowly, even with a single ten when there is a lack of strength. His mysteries allow us to bring before God the Incarnation, the public life, the Passion and the glory of Christ. Mary accompanies this contemplation and directs attention to her Son.
In a shared room, other patients should always be respected. Prayer can be silent; it does not need to be imposed or to alter rest. For those who cannot speak, hold the rosary or listen to a consented prayer can be a simple company.
A community founded in 2002
The official date of foundation, 21 February 2002, places this quasiparish in a stage of consolidation of pastoral care within the large hospital complex. The community has held a Sunday and Mass celebration every week according to the episcopal directory consulted.
These times are a historical testimony, not a guarantee for the visit. In a hospital, access conditions, works, health measures and pastoral organization may change at short notice.
verified location for the map
The episcopal direction coincides with the institutional direction of the Veteran Medical Center: 53 Jinhwangdo-ro 61-gil, Gang-gu, Seúl. The open mapping places the hospital complex in 37.5303452, 127.1480150.
The marker on this page identifies the hospital as a place of the community. It does not claim that these coordinates are the exact door of the chapel or that there is independent access from the street. Anyone who needs pastoral care must first consult with information or the corresponding service of the centre.
Responsible visit and privacy
A hospital is not an ordinary tourist destination. You should not enter clinical areas without authorization, interrupt celebrations or treatments, or photograph patients, histories, screens, identification bracelets or staff without consent.
Before you go it is appropriate to confirm that the external visit is allowed and to ask about the current location and time of the chapel. Patients' needs, infection control and hospital instructions are a priority.
Prayer to Our Lady of the Seven Dolores
Mary, Mother of the Seven Dolores, you who stayed by the Cross of Jesus, accompany the sick of the Veterans' Medical Center and those who suffer in body or spirit. Hold their families, strengthen those who care, give wisdom to professionals and comfort to those who live the duel. Teach us not to flee the pain of others, to respect the dignity of each person and to wait in the Risen Christ. He calls for peace and reconciliation in Korea. Amen.
