Marian devotion
The young parish of Secheon, in the Dalseong district of Daegu, is dedicated to Holy Mary, Mother of God. Since its foundation in 2019, this title places the community before the central mystery of Christmas: the eternal Son of God truly assumed our humanity within Mary.

An officially confirmed patronage
The directory of the Episcopal Conference of Korea records "Mary, Mother of God" as the patron of Secheon and confirms the foundation, direction and parish jurisdiction.
The title of an image or a free translation has not been deducted. The Korean Expression Saint Mary corresponds directly to the Catholic confession of St. Mary, Mother of God.
A parish of the 21st century
The community was founded 25 January 2019 to attend part of Secheon-ri, in Dasa-eup. The official record includes it in the archdiocese of Daegu.
As a recent parish, it is not attributed an ancient history or extraordinary events. Its importance lies in the daily Christian life that begins to be built in an urban area in transformation.
The meaning of Theotokos
La Iglesia antigua llamó a María Theotokos, Greek word meaning "Mother of God" or "the one who gave birth to God." The Council of Ephesus solemnly confirmed this title in 431.
St. John Paul II explains that Mary is a mother in the order of the human generation. But who was born of her is one person, the eternal Son of the Father made man; therefore the Church truly calls her the Mother of God.
An affirmation about Jesus Christ
The Marian title protects first of all the truth about Christ: Jesus is not a separate man to whom God later joined. He is a single divine person with divine and human nature.
By venerating Mary under this name, Secheon proclaims the reality of the Incarnation. God did not pretend to be human: He received from a woman flesh, blood, history and belonging to our family.
God gets close
Pope Francis has pointed out that saying "Mother of God" recalls that the Lord became close as a child carried into his mother's womb.
Divine greatness appears in vulnerability. This faith invites us to recognize Christ on whom they depend on other care: children, the sick, the elderly, people with disabilities and those who live alone.
Mary keeps and meditates
The Christmas Gospel presents Mary by preserving events and meditating on them in her heart. Their silence is not passivity, but attention capable of uniting words, sufferings and promises.
In an era of immediate reaction, the parish can learn from it to listen before responding, discerning before acting and keeping the intimacy of those who trust a pain.
Mother tender and humble
Francis describes Mary as a tender, humble, poor mother of things and rich in love, united with Jesus and attentive to others.
This spiritual motherhood does not replace the responsibility of each person or legitimate ill-health dependencies. Inspires a welcoming community that accompanies and helps to grow in freedom.

The Solemnity of St. Mary, Mother of God is celebrated 1 January, 8th of Christmas and World Day of Peace in the Catholic calendar.
Start the year under this title uniting Incarnation, motherhood and peace. Christian peace is not just the absence of conflict: it requires justice, dignity and effective care of life.
Take care of all life
In 2025, Francis linked solemnity to the protection of every person: life in the womb, childhood, those who suffer, the poor, the elderly, the single and dying.
A parish dedicated to the Mother of God is called to create secure networks of accompaniment, to refer professionals when necessary and not to abandon those who carry alone with care responsibilities.
Prayer for Korea and for peace
The World Day of Peace gives this patronage a particular resonance in Korea. Prayer can embrace divided families, victims of war and those working for reconciliation.
To pray for peace also means to combat contempt, disinformation and violence in daily life, beginning with the way of speaking and treating those who think differently.
