The advocation confirmed
The archdiocese of Gwangju identifies as a patron of CEO Greeting, the Holy Name of Mary. The directory of the Korean Episcopal Conference offers the most extensive formulation The Name of the Holy Spiritwhich can be translated as "Mary of the Most Holy Name" or "Most Holy Name of Mary."
The difference is extension, not identity. Both expressions designate the same Marian patronage and allow it to be distinguished from other titles present in Korean parishes.
What it means to venerate the name of Mary
In the Bible, the name expresses a person's identity and mission. St. Luke presents by name Mary, the young woman of Nazareth who freely welcomed the angel's announcement and gave her life to the plan of God.
The Church honors her name because she refers to the Mother of Jesus and her answer of faith. It is not a magic word or a devotion separate from Christ: pronouncing the name of Mary leads to the remembrance of her motherhood, her humility and her fidelity to the Son.
Lycúrgical memory
The memory of the Most Holy Name of Mary is celebrated 12 September. In it, the Christian community gives thanks for the person and mission of the Virgin and invokes her intercession.
The celebration calls for trust and conversion. True Marian devotion is not left in an external invocation: it learns from Mary to listen to the Word, to serve the neighbor and to remain with Christ.
A parish born in 1965
The official file sets the foundation of Wolsana-dong on 7 January 1965. Namdong's history confirms that Wolsana-dong was one of the separate communities of that historical parish to attend to the growth and progressive pastoral organization of Gwangju.
This origin places Wolsana-dong within a local ecclesial genealogy: the former community of Bukdong originated Namdong in 1949 and Namdong, in turn, helped other parishes, including Wolsana-dong, to be born.
Gwangju and a Church rooted in the city
The parish belongs to the South Gwangju district and is located in Nam-gu. Its name comes from the Wolsana-dong neighborhood, not from a different Marian episode.
The historical documentation shows a Church in Gwangju that was multiplying communities to bring sacramental life closer to specific neighborhoods. Wolsana-dong is part of this urban and pastoral growth of the second half of the 20th century.
An Temprano witness of Christian diálogo
A 1968 Catholic chronicle retains the intervention of the then parish priest of Wolsana-dong, Father Kim Jong-nam, at an ecumenical conference held in Bukdong during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
His call not to repeat the divisions that united against Jesus shows that the young parish already participated in diocesan life and in the search for unity. It is a historical fact, not an exclusive attribution to advocation.
Documented pastoral life
A study on pastoral planning in the Archdiocese analyzed Wolsana-dong's plan for 2009. His guidelines included deepening the Eucharist, strengthening family prayer and family mass, and reading and studying St Paul's letters.
These elements help to understand how a Marian parish lives its patronage: not only by a name, but also by listening to Scripture, celebration and family life.
The current community
The archdiocese records stable pastoral attention and the presence of the Sisters of the Charity of Jesus. Those responsible, hours and pastoral data may change and the official source should be consulted before a visit.
At the time of the consultation, the diocesan website indicated the working days and several Sunday celebrations. This page does not reproduce the schedules as permanent to prevent future modification from disorienting pilgrims.
verified location for the map
The official address is 13 Jung-ro 24beon-gilin Nam-gu. The very page of the archdiocese incorporates for Wolsana-dong the marker 35.1430296594104, 126.901542922666.
This point, consistent with the name and address of the temple, is the one used on the advocations map. The marker has not been placed in the generic center of the neighborhood or in another church in Gwangju.
Do not confuse with Gojan
In South Korea there is at least another parish dedicated to the Holy Name of Mary: Gojan, in Incheon. They share the Marian title, but they are different communities, they belong to different dioceses and have their own pages and markers.
The repetition of an advocation does not eliminate its local roots. Each document documents where and how a particular community has received it as patronage.
To visit and pray
Wolsana-dong is an active parish, not a tourist site. It is appropriate to confirm the hours in advance, enter with respect, avoid interrupting celebrations and request permission before photographing people.
The visit can be an opportunity to entrust the unity of Christians, the families of the neighborhood, vocations and those who keep the daily life of the community in silence.
Prayer to the Most Holy Name of Mary of Wolsana-dong
Mary, whose name speaks with love the community of Wolsana-dong, teach us to listen to the Word and to keep Christ in the heart. It accompanies the families of Gwangju, strengthens those who serve this parish and make us artisans of unity. In calling upon you, let us learn your humility, your faithfulness and your surrender to the Son. Amen.
