Ntra. Mrs. de Lourdes de Daegu - The Cathedral of Gyesan
The cathedral of Gyesan, whose patron is Our Lady of Lourdes, was born as a parish in 1898 and is a cathedral of the archdiocese of Daegu since 1911. The present Roman-Gothic temple with glass windows from France was completed in 1902 and is the only construction of the early 20th century that is preserved in Daegu.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The first temple, of wood and Korean style, was consecrated in 1899 and burned shortly thereafter; the missionary Father Robert built it in stone and brick, completing it in 1902 with glass windows imported from France and Hong Kong.
- In April 1911, when the Catholic constituency of Daegu was erected, its cathedral was appointed; in 1991 it was enriched with glass windows of the Korean martyrs and the four evangelists.
- The local student protests of the Korean independence movement began next to the cathedral on March 8, 1919, an episode that links it to the memory of the Korean people.
- St. John Paul II visited the cathedral in May 1984, during his trip to Korea; the temple is protected as Historic Site No. 290 of South Korea.
Our Lady of Lourdes (Daegu)
For the Catholics of Daegu, heirs of a Church sealed by the blood of the Korean martyrs, the Cathedral of Gyesan is the mother house of its archdiocese: in it are celebrated the ordinations and the Crismal Mass under the eyes of Our Lady of Lourdes.
🙏 Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
