Visit of Mary of Hyodon - Meeting, service and care of the land in Jeju

The parish of Hyodon, in the south of Jeju, looks at Mary in the mystery of the Visitation. The Virgin receives the news of the angel and is on her way to accompany Elizabeth. This dynamic of meeting finds echo in a rural community that works, takes care of the land and creates links between generations.

A community born as a missionary station

The parish of Seogwipo established the mission station of Hyodon in August 1957. For more than thirty years the community grew up as a dependent chapel, bringing together the faithful of several nuclei from the south of the island.

This previous stage is an essential part of history and avoids presenting 1988 as if there had been no previously organized Catholic life.

Parish Erection in 1988

On 10 February 1988 Hyodon was raised to parish together with Jungmun. The new community also received the attention of the Namwon station and then had about eight hundred faithful.

When Namwon became a parish in 1997, the territory was reorganized. In 2021 Hyodon founded the new Wimi missionary station.

Visitation in the Gospel

After the Annunciation, Mary quickly leaves for the mountain region where Isabel lives. It is not locked in the gift received: it brings Christ and puts himself at the service of another woman.

The encounter gives rise to joy, blessing and the song of the Magnificat. Mary recognizes that the wonders come from God and that her mercy reaches the humble.

A party on May 31

The diocese identifies May 31 as a party, in accordance with the liturgical calendar of the Latin Church. The date places the Visitation after the Annunciation and before the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist.

The patronage does not come from a local apparition. It is a biblical mystery celebrated by the universal liturgy.

Mary, woman on her way

Pope Francis highlights three attitudes: Mary listens, discerns and acts. Their speed is not agitation, but a response to a concrete need illuminated by the Word.

The Visitation offers a spirituality especially suitable for a parish: to leave one's own, to cross distances, to accompany and to recognize the action of God in the other.

Twenty-five years of written memory

The community published a story of its first 25 years as a parish. The volume takes up the time of the missionary station, the creation of the parish, the characteristics of the region and its growth.

To preserve this memory protects the contributions of families, priests, religious and lay people that made the community possible.

Ecology and Neighbourhood

Hyodon has promoted small gardens and gardens around the compound and in the neighborhood. The objective expressed by its members was not only to beautify, but to open spaces where neighbours and parishes could meet.

Ecological conversion becomes concrete when land, food and shared work create relationships. This practice harmonizes with Mary, who walks a real way to serve.

Community work in the branches

For decades, communities in southern Jeju have prepared branches for the celebration of Palm Sunday. In Hyodon, older people, young people, children and inhabitants come from other regions.

The material task becomes the occasion for the transmission of faith and reception. It is not a directly Marian fact, but it shows how the mystery of the Visitation can be embodied in simple encounters.

An open rural community

The parish territory includes Seogwipo neighborhoods and Namwon@-@ eup villages. The mix of local population and new residents poses the challenge of integrating different traditions and experiences.

The Visitation invites you to receive the other as the bearer of a presence that can awaken joy and gratitude.

Hyodon is an active parish. It is appropriate to consult diocesan times, to respect the work of the community and not to enter into gardens or dependencies without permission. His headline party is May 31.
