In Yamusukro, the capital of Ivory Coast, is the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, the largest church in the world. It was built by President Félix Houphouët-Boigny in the 1980s.
The Basilica of Peace
The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace has capacity for 18,000 people. It was consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990. The dome is 158 meters high, higher than that of St. Peter of the Vatican.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of Peace protects Ivory Coast from civil wars. The faithful believe that the Virgin builds bridges between peoples.
