In Cartago, the former capital of Costa Rica, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels is the most important Marian sanctuary in the country. The image was found by a peasant in 1635.
The Virgin of Angels
The tradition tells that in 1635, a peasant named Juana Pereira found a small image of the Virgin Mary on a rock. The image worked many miracles: cures, conversions and protections.
Every 2 August, Costa Ricans celebrate the feast of Our Lady of the Angels with a pilgrimage from all over the country to Cartago. The party is the most important in Costa Rica.
