Marian devotion
The Divine Pastor of Souls
Mary, Pastor who takes care of her flock
Born in the 18th century Capuchin Seville, devotion to the Divine Pastor represents Mary as a pastoralist who takes care of souls with tenderness. She is a patron of Cantillana and is venerated with immense fervor in Barquisimeto (Venezuela).
Origin and history
The devotion was born in Seville at the beginning of the 18th century, promoted by the cappuccino Fra Isidoro of Seville, who in 1703 spread the image of Mary as "Divine Pastor of the Souls," represented as a pastoralist surrounded by sheep. The new iconography, designed for popular preaching, was quickly extended by Spain and America by the hands of the Capuchin.
Today the Divine Pastora is patron of Cantillana (Seville) and is venerated with enormous fervor in Barquisimeto (Venezuela), where its procession of January 14 is one of the largest Marian manifestations in America. The image of the Virgin Pastor with her flock expresses the maternal care of Mary, who seeks and keeps every soul.
