Ntra. Madam. Queen of Peace of Kiwamirembe, Uganda

The great Marian shrine of Uganda is Kiwamirembe, a hill between tea plantations by the road of Entebbe, dedicated to Our Lady Queen of Peace. It was born of the pleas for peace during the wars that struck the country between 1979 and 1986, and was officially opened in 1989. His name in Luganda means "peace giver."

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The Comonian missionary John Bernardi encouraged the faithful to pray the Rosary for peace during the war and promised to erect a sanctuary to the Virgin on the hill if Uganda was to regain peace: the promise was fulfilled, Kiwamirembe was born.
  • Among the looted in the 1979 war, a box with a statue of the Virgin appeared next to the railroad of Kampala, intact; his memory was attached to the origin of the sanctuary.
  • The sanctuary was opened by Cardinal Emmanuel Nsubuga on May 26, 1989; the hill hosts a Calvary mountain, a Gethsemane garden, a crucis track and a simple replica of the Holy Escalera.
  • It remains a living place of pilgrimage and vigil of the archdiocese of Kampala; they also come faithful from other confessions. The Dolorosa, for its part, is the owner of the Cathedral of Masaka.
