Our Lady of Good Help, Patron of Dominica

The Commonwealth of Dominica, the "nature island" of the Caribbean, has a Catholic community that accounts for about 61 per cent of the population, being the most Catholic English-speaking country in the Caribbean. The diocese of Roseau, built in 1850, covers the entire island. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Fair Haven in Roseau, built between 1850 and 1890, is the spiritual center of the country. The title of Our Lady of Good Relief (Fair Haven, "Safe Port") has a special meaning for an island that has suffered numerous devastating hurricanes, such as David (1979) and Mary (2017). The Virgin is invoked as a refuge and protection in the midst of storms.

The architecture of Roseau's cathedral is unique: built in the form of a Latin cross with volcanic stone walls and gommier wood, its interior is decorated with beautiful windows that represent the mysteries of the Rosary. The image of Our Lady of Good Relief, a wooden size brought from France, presides over the main altar. After Hurricane Mary in 2017, the cathedral suffered serious damage, but was restored thanks to international aid. The feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December) is the patron celebration of the diocese, but the feast of Our Lady of Good Relief is celebrated on the third Sunday of October with a procession that runs through the streets of Roseau.

Nuestra Señora de Fátima de Portsmouth

Party: 13 May Place: Portsmouth (Saint John, Dominica)

In Portsmouth, the second city of Dominica, the parish of Our Lady of Fatima serves the Catholic community on the north coast. The church was built in 1958 by Irish missionaries and is a wooden building painted in blue and white, traditional Marian colors. The image of Our Lady of Fatima, a size of cedar wood donated by the Portuguese Church, was brought to Dominica in 1960 by Madeirian immigrants. The parish is known for its vibrant group of young people who organize a living Rosary every May 13, in which children represent the mysteries of the Rosary in traditional Dominican costumes.

"Our Lady of Fatima of Portsmouth, pray for us.

Our Lady of the Rosary of La Plaine

Party: 7 October · Place: La Plaine (Saint Patrick, Dominica)

In La Plaine, a small community on the southeast coast of Dominica, the church of Our Lady of the Rosary is the center of the parish life of the region. The church was built in 1925 by Jesuit missionaries and is a stone and wood building with a forged iron bell tower. The image of Our Lady of the Rosary, a mahogany wood size carved by a local artisan, represents the Virgin with the Rosary in her hands, dressed in colors that remember the flags of the Antilles. The feast of October 7 is celebrated with a procession that runs through the streets of La Plaine, followed by traditional dances such as the "bélé" and the "chanté masqué."

"Our Lady of the Rosary of La Plaine, pray for us.

Dominica, known as the "nature island of the Caribbean" for its lush vegetation and biodiversity, has in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Good Relief a monument that reflects the history of the island. Built with volcanic stone and gommier wood, the cathedral survived hurricanes and earthquakes. The image of Our Lady of Good Relief, a French size of the 19th century, is venerated as a protector of sailors and fishermen. Local tradition tells that the Virgin saved the city of Roseau from total destruction during Hurricane David in 1979, when the sea waters miraculously stopped before the image.
