In San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace is the most important Marian sanctuary in the country. The image was crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1982.
The Virgin and the Civil War
El Salvador suffered a devastating civil war (1980- 1992). The Catholics were persecuted and many priests were killed. The Virgin Mary was the mother who comforted them in suffering.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of Peace protected Salvadorans during the war. The faithful believe that the Virgin guides them to peace and reconciliation.
