In Guadalupe, a village of Cáceres, is the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, the most important Marian sanctuary of Extremadura. The image was found by a pastor in the 14th century.
The image of Guadalupe
Tradition tells that in 1320, a pastor named Gil Cordero found the image of the Virgin Mary on the Guadalupe River. The image worked many miracles: cures, conversions and protections.
The monastery of Guadalupe was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993. The Virgin of Guadalupe is the patron of Extremadura and of Hispanity.
