El santuario de Fátima de Mato Inglês (São Vicente)
In Mato Inglês, about five kilometres from Mindelo, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima, temple of the Diocese of Mindelo, rises. The Virgin of Fatima thus has its own house on the island of São Vicente, next to the pro-cathedral of Our Lady of Light.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- El santuario is registered as Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, in Mato Inglês, a few kilometers from the pro-catedral of Mindelo.
- It belongs to the young diocese of Mindelo, erected in 2003; its first bishop was Arlindo Gomes Furtado, later Cardinal.
- The diocesan seat is the pro-cathedral of Our Lady of Light, church of 1862 in the historic centre of Mindelo, retired church in 2016 and 2025.
- The devotion to Fatima is very rooted in the archipelago: there are chapels of Fatima on the island of Sal (in a town called precisely Fatima) and in Boa Vista.

In the arid São Vicente, the Virgin of Fatima is venerated in her sanctuary of Mato Inglês: one of the traces of the deep link of Cape Verde, a Portuguese-speaking country, with the message of Cova da Iria.
