Our Lady of the Orthodox Annunciation of St. Gabriel (Nazareth)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Greek-Orthodox Church of the Annunciation of St. Gabriel is in Nazareth, in the Northern District of Israel. It rises next to the spring traditionally known as the well of Mary. This fact sheet refers to the Orthodox temple and its community, not to the Catholic Basilica of the Annunciation, which is another building and has its own page on this site.

The map places the building in 32.7070, 35.3017. The coordinate comes from OpenStreetMap, way 1157250968, identified as the Greek-Orthodox church of the Annunciation. The precision is verified_building: points to the cartographed building, not the exact point of an ancient spring or a concrete scene of Mary's life.

Documented history

The church belongs to the Greek-Orthodox tradition of Jerusalem and is also known as the Archangel Gabriel Church. The Higher Presidential Committee of Church Affairs in Palestine page identifies it as an eastern Orthodox church in Nazareth and places it in the place that tradition relates to Gabriel's announcement to Mary. The Patriarchate of Jerusalem also documents the celebration of the Annunciation in the Orthodox sanctuary of the city, with liturgy and presence of the local community.

The temple is linked to the water. The Orthodox tradition places next to the spring the angel's first greeting, before the story continued in Mary's house. This way of reading the episode is related to the Protoevangelio de Santiago, an ancient Christian text not included in the biblical canon. An apocryphal source that influenced tradition should not be confused with a contemporary act of fact.

The present existence of the temple, its veneration and its location are made different from the antiquity of tradition. Mapping allows the church to be located; ecclesial sources allow it to describe its belonging and its celebrations; none of these checks alone shows that the spring retains the exact historical point of the first greeting.

Tradition

The Orthodox tradition of Nazareth distinguishes two moments from the announcement: the initial greeting by the water and the subsequent announcement in the house. That is why the church of San Gabriel and the Catholic Basilica of the Annunciation are not an editorial duplication of the same building. They are two places of worship of different communities, geographically separated and associated with two accents of the same Christian memory.

The Greek-Orthodox Church celebrates the Annunciation as a mystery of the incarnation of Christ and honors Mary as Theotokos, Mother of God. Mary's veneration is not worship: worship corresponds to God, while the faithful ask the Virgin for her intercession before her Son.

Legend and limits of the record

There is no modern Marian apparition in this temple or an approved local miracle associated with the spring. The tradition of the first greeting by water belongs to the Christian memory and the interpretation of ancient sources; it does not appear as an excavation that has demonstrated the exact point of the evangelical scene. No specific cures or favors are attributed to the church without a record that documents them.

Ecclesial State

The state indicated is other _ church: is a temple of the Greek-Orthodox Church of Jerusalem. This label identifies the ecclesial community and avoids presenting it as a Catholic approval of an apparition or an archaeological location. The Patriarchate documents the Orthodox veneration of the Annunciation in Nazareth; the fact sheet does not add a pronunciation on the supernatural of tradition.

Anecdotes and stories

The presence of two shrines of the Annunciation in Nazareth allows us to see how one city retains Christian traditions that are not identical. The Catholic Basilica especially recalls the house and the grotto; Saint Gabriel remembers the spring and the first greeting according to Orthodox tradition. The map retains both realities because they are two places and two communities, not because the similar name allows them to be merged.

The Patriarchate celebrations bring together clergy and faithful from the Arab Orthodox community of Nazareth and pilgrims. This living cult is a present ecclesial fact; the exact attribution of each element of tradition continues to have the degree of certainty that sources indicate.

Prayer

St. Mary, Theotokos, intercedes before the Lord for the Greek-Orthodox community of Nazareth, for the Churches of the Holy Land and for all Christians who seek Jesus Christ with truth. Teach us to receive the Word with humility and to serve with peace. Amen.
