Marian devotion
Where is he?
Our Lady of Africa of Bietry is a Catholic parish located in Bietry, within the commune of Marcory, in Abiyán, Côte d'Ivoire. The story published by the Archdiocese of Abiyán explains that it was born to serve the Christian population of the new neighborhoods of the area, which had moved away from the parish seat of Santa Teresa de Marcory.
The map uses the church building "Église Notre Dame d'Afrique" identified by OpenStreetMap (way 576010345), in 5.2723, − 3.9756. The precision is verified_building: the cartographed building has been checked, not an inside coordinate of the altar or image. Bietry remains differentiated from other Marian shrines of Abiyan and from the national vocation of Our Lady of Africa of Attécoubé.
Documented history
The origin of the community is related to the growth of Marcory. The archdiocese reports that the demographic expansion created new residential districts and that it was necessary to open a parish in the Bietry sector. The new parish was erected on 15 September 1974 by decree of Cardinal Bernard Yago, then Archbishop of Abijan.
The same story is linked to the Notre-Dame d'Afrique College. The school was founded in 1957 for the Christian formation of young people and, over the years, its presence was closely related to the parish community. The diocesan narrative explains that the school missionaries participated in the celebrations, in the preparation of baptisms, in confessions and in catechesis. This continuity between the educational center, chapel and parish is part of the historical identity of Bietry.
Before the erection of the parish, the Christian community of the former Koumassi depended on Santa Teresa of the Child Jesus of Marcory, which in turn came from the expansion of the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief of Treichville. The official history presents the new parish as the result of this process of growth and pastoral reorganization, not as a result of an apparition.
Tradition
The advocation of Our Lady of Africa places Mary in the concrete life of the African Church and its urban communities. In Bietry, devotion is expressed within a parish: the Eucharist, catechesis, preparation of the sacraments, confession and the life of young people. Mary is venerated and asked to intercede before God; she does not worship her, for worship corresponds only to God.
The name should not be confused with a statement that the image or temple is the place of an apparition. This document documents a parish erected by decree and a local Marian advocation in Abiyan. This ecclesial reality is sufficient to recognize its existence without adding phenomena that do not contain.
Legend
There is no foundational legend of apparition or a recognized miracle associated with the parish of Bietry in the diocesan fountain consulted. If there are oral memories of the community, they should be published separately from the documented history of the 1974 decree and the foundation of the school.
Ecclesial State
The state indicated is permitted veneration: The archdiocese documents a Catholic parish erected by decree and dedicated to Our Lady of Africa. There is no pronunciation about apparitions or miracles, and this fact sheet does not affirm any. "Permitted Worship" here refers to the public life of the parish and not to a supernatural approval.
Anecdotes and stories
The history of Bietry retains the role of religious teachers in community formation. The first spaces linked to the school also served for prayer and pastoral ministry at different points in Abiyan. With the growth of the neighborhoods, this presence became a stable parish for the Christians of the sector.
The parish also recalls a chain of responsibilities: the diocese, the parents who attended the school and the communities who participated in the sacraments. It is a history of ordinary pastoral construction, different from extraordinary narrations that can only be presented when there are sufficient sources.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Our Lady of Africa, intercedes before God for the parish of Bietry, for Abijan, for the young and for all families seeking a community of faith. Help us to serve with joy, to care for the unity of the Church and to follow Jesus Christ. Amen.
