Marian devotion
Where is he?
The National Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart is in the church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 193 Avoca Street, Randwick, in New South Wales, Australia. The community belongs to the Archdiocese of Sydney and is attended by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. The parish source presents it as a national sanctuary for this advocation.
The point of the map corresponds to the church node identified by OpenStreetMap (7079411585), next to the direction of the sanctuary. Precision is used verified_building: the mapping identifies the building or place of worship, but not an inner position of the image or altar. The existence of the sanctuary and its prayer activity do not imply that there is a supernatural apparition or phenomenon in Randwick.
Documented history
The official history of the parish explains that the first building was an iglesian-brick school, with capacity for about three hundred people. In 1885 Cardinal Patrick Moran entrusted the parish of Randwick to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart; Father Tierney celebrated the first mass of the congregation in the church-school on November 15 of that year.
The new church was built when the first building was small. It was designed by Sheerin and Hennessy, raised by Eaton of North Sydney, and opened in May 1888 with the title of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. The ship, the baptistery and the bell tower of that building are part of the present church. Its windows, made in Tours (France) and placed in 1899, also belong to the documented history of the temple.
After World War I it was necessary to expand the whole. The transept, the presbytery, the major altar, the lateral altars, the sacristy and a six-classroom school were incorporated into the project; the extended church was blessed and opened on 2 October 1921. The great eastern glass, designed in Nottingham and made by John Hardman and Sons of Birmingham, was blessed on June 7, 1928.
The present Marian sanctuary was born as a project of parents Treand and Smith. The work, designed by Agabiti and Millane and built by H. A. Taylor, was opened on October 17, 1937. In 2008, when the church was 120 years old, the building was renovated and painting, lighting and sound were repaired. These are stages of the material and pastoral history of the place, not dates of an apparition.
Tradition and devotion
The title Our Lady of the Sacred Heart belongs to the spirituality of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. The page of the sanctuary recalls that Father Jules Chevalier gave it to the Virgin in 1857 as a thanksgiving for the help received in founding the congregation. In this tradition, Mary leads the faithful to the Heart of Christ and is asked to intercede before God.
The Randwick community celebrates a ninth week of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, linked to the Gospel account of the Cana weddings. The ninth expresses a practice of prayer and petition for specific needs; it does not in itself constitute a declaration of miracles or of supernatural origin. Adoration is only for God: Mary is venerated and asked for intercession.
Legend
There is no local apparition of the Virgin in Randwick, a recognized private message or a miracle officially attributed to the sanctuary in the ecclesial sources consulted. Nor is a legend introduced about the building of the temple. The graces that the faithful can relate belong to personal experience until there is a medical and ecclesial record that allows them to be otherwise qualified.
Ecclesial State
The state indicated is permitted venerationin the sense that there is a public Catholic church, a sanctuary officially presented as a national and a pastoral life attended by a religious congregation. A pronunciation of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on a supernatural apparition or phenomenon in Randwick is not recorded in the verified sources. "National Sanctuary" describes the recognition and ecclesial function of the place; it does not automatically amount to approval of an apparition.
Anecdotes and stories
The history of the windows unites the Australian temple with European workshops: the first windows came from Tours and the great eastern window was made in Birmingham. It is also significant that the chapel-sanctuary was a project remembered as a dream of two priests of the community and that it was opened in 1937, when the church had been for almost half a century.
The building thus retains several layers: the church-school, the parish of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, the extension of interwars, the Marian sanctuary and contemporary renewal. Randwick's devotion is understood within that continuity of prayer, sacraments and pastoral service.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, intercedes before God for the community of Randwick, for Australia and for those who seek comfort. Lead us to Jesus Christ, teach us to live with a humble heart and help us to serve our brothers. Amen.
