Marian parties in China
Chinese Marian Tradition
Marian parties are the culminating moments of the life of the Catholic Church in China. From Our Lady of China's feast to the celebrations of local advocacy, Marian parties are expressions of the faith and devotion of the Chinese Catholic people.
The Feast of Our Lady of China
The feast of Our Lady of China is held on the second Sunday of May. Established by Pope Pius XII in 1941, this feast is the most important Marian celebration of the Church in China. The faithful come to the churches to participate in solemn masses, processions and community prayers.
The feast of Our Lady of China is also a day of prayer for the Church in China, calling for the unity of communities and religious freedom. Pope Francis has asked Catholics all over the world to join in prayer for China at this party.
Other important Marian fiestas
Feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December): This party is widely held in China, especially in the provinces of Fujian, Guangdong and Hong Kong. The faithful come to the churches to participate in solemn masses and processions.
Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief (June 27): This feast is celebrated in the parishes dedicated to this advocation, especially in the provinces of Hebei, Shandong and Henan.
Feast of Our Lady of Fatima (May 13): This party is held in the Chinese communities of Hong Kong, Macao and South-East Asia.
The popular celebrations
Marian parties in China are accompanied by popular celebrations including processions, fireworks, community banquets and cultural events. The Chinese faithful have developed their own ways of celebrating Marian parties, adapting them to Chinese cultural sensitivity.
In some regions, Marian parties coincide with traditional Chinese festivities, such as the Lunar New Year or the Middle Autumn Festival. This coincidence has led to unique celebrations that combine Marian devotion with local cultural traditions.
Marian parties during persecution
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Marian parties were prohibited. However, clandestine Catholics continued to celebrate in secret, often at night and under the threat of persecution. These clandestine celebrations were an act of spiritual resistance and fidelity to faith.
The Marian parties today
Today, Marian parties are held openly in China, although under the supervision of the government. The churches organize solemn masses, processions and cultural events, and the faithful come in mass to participate in the celebrations.
