The patron of Bicol, venerated in the south of Luzon.
In Naga, in the region of Bicol, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is the most important Marian sanctuary in southern Luzon. The image was brought by the Spaniards in the 18th century.
The river procession
Every September, the bicolans celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia with a river procession along the Bicol River. The image of the Virgin is carried on a boat while the faithful sing and pray.
Tradition tells that the Virgin of Peñafrancia protects the bicolans from the typhoons and eruptions of the Mayon volcano. The faithful believe that the Virgin guides and protects them.
