Marian devotion
In the marisma of Grand- Pré, where on 5 September 1755 the order of deportation was read, the Aadians raised in 1922 a church that is not a church: a memorial to a scattered people, under the advocation of the Virgin who they themselves had chosen as a patron.
Documented history
El 5 September 1755, about three in the afternoonLieutenant Colonel John Winslow gathered the men of the region together in the church of Saint- Charles- de-Mines and read them the deportation order. His own diary, published in the 19th century, states that "418 valid men entered" And call that day "Black Friday 1755." From the Les Mines region were deported Two thousand two hundred people, almost a third of about six thousand that year.
La conmemorative iglesia was built on 1922 por iniciativa de la Société mutuelle l’Assomption, con proyecto del arquitecto René-Arthur Fréchet; el interior se terminó en 1930. Parks Canada es explícito en dos puntos que conviene no adornar: the design does not reproduce the church prior to Deportation, whose appearance is unknownand the archaeological excavations of 2001 suggest that it was lifted approximately donde estuvo la parroquial de Grand-Pré. Es Edificio Federal del Patrimonio Clasificado desde el 14 de mayo de 1992 y alberga una estatua de Notre-Dame de l’Assomption, los seis cuadros de Claude Picard de 1987 y las placas con los nombres de las familias deportadas.
A precision that matters not to confuse history with literature: Evangeline is a fictional character, created by Longfellow in his 1847 poem. His statue was developed in 1920 by the railway company Dominion Atlantic Railway for tourist purposes. The Cross of Deportationon the other hand, it does have a religious character: the 19 August 1924 after a mass, and in 2005 he moved to Horton Landing, the actual place of boarding.
The Assumption, patron of the Acadians: three acts, not one
This is where the error usually slips, and it is appropriate to carefully separate what happened.
First, a congress. The days 20 and 21 July 1881at the Collège Saint-Joseph de Memramcook, the First Acadian National Convention met with about 5,000 people. The most ignited debate faced two dates: on June 24, San Juan Bautista, which was that of the French-Canadian, and the August 15, the Assumptiondefended by the priest Marcel-François Richard. His proposal was imposed, and the feast and the patron were voted: the Blessed Virgin in her Assumption was proclaimed national employer of the Acadian people. But a convention is a congress, not a canonical act.
Second, ecclesiastical approval. El 16 September 1881the five bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Halifax signed the approval of that request. This is the verifiable ecclesiastical act - and it is from an ecclesiastical province, no de la Santa Sede.
Thirdly, a pontifical ratification that does not contain. Circula que Pio XI habría ratificado el patronguamiento el 19 de enero de 1938. The volume of 1938 of the Acta Apostolicae Sedis, the fourteen fascicles of the year, without finding a single acadian mention. Nor is there a decree of Lion XIII or Pius X. As long as the document does not appear, that data is not supported.
From those conventions came the other symbols: flag acadiana, adopted in Miscouche on August 15, 1884, tricolor with the star of the Assumption; and the anthem Ave Maris Stellaadopted in the same convention of 1884 - not in the convention of 1881 - although the sources differ on who proposed it.

Qué significa este lugar
A deportee people chose the Virgin brought to heaven as a patron, and set her national feast on the day of the Assumption. It is not a devotional coincidence: those who had lost the land put their identity under the sign of a hope that does not depend on owning a territory. The Ave Maris Stella "Hail, sea star" was sung by people whose deportation was made by boat.
Es intercession, non-worship: God is worshipped, and Mary is worshipped by asking to intercede, which always leads to Christ. And it is worth saying clearly what this site is: a memorial, a place of historical memory with a strong religious burden, not a sanctuary with established veneration.
Discernment and limits of this sheet
Grand-Pré is not a Marian sanctuary or active Catholic cult; it is a national historical place and World Heritage, and its commemorative church functions as a museum. The patronage of the Assumption was proclaimed by a civil convention in July 1881 and approved by the bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Halifax in September of that year; No ratification of the Holy See. The church of 1922 does not reproduce the one before the Deportation and is only about raised in its location. Evangeline is a literary character, not historical. It has not been possible to document mass at the memorial on August 15, so it is not stated.
This page does not present objects, images or practices as autonomous powers or transform a devotional tradition into historical or scientific certainty.

Para meditar y orar
The star of the sea, which you led to those who left without wanting to leave: remember those who are taken from their land today and do not know where they are going. Teach us to keep the memory without the poison of grudge, and give us the hope of those who, having lost everything, continue to look up. By Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
