Grotto de Nuestra Señora de Lourdes (Flatrock)

Marian devotion

Excavated on the side of an Atlantic cliff by the neighbours of a fishing village of Newfoundland, the Flatrock grotto reproduces that of Massabielle. There John Paul II prayed on September 12, 1984, before blessing a fleet of cross-shaped boats.

Documented history

The origin is dated precisely. On the occasion of Mariano Year 1954 —proclamado por Pius XII en la encíclica Fulgens crown of 8 September 1953, when the centenary of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception was fulfilled - the father William Sullivan, párroco de St. Michael’s, peregrinó a la gruta de Massabielle, en Lourdes. Volvió impresionado por el parecido entre aquel terreno y el que rodeaba su iglesia, y con la idea de construir allí una réplica.

The work was developed between 1954 and 1958. El cantero Michael Curtis, de St. John’s, se encargó de la cantería y de dirigir los trabajos, y con él the neighbors of the town, most of the fishing people, excavated by hand the rock and the gravel of the cliff. The property register stresses that the grotto exists for the money and voluntary work of the parishioners, and adds a detail that says a lot: all the statues of the enclosure were a gift from the neighbors themselves. The dedication was held on 17 August 1958.

First the cave was raised, with the images of white marble of the Virgin and of Saint Bernadette. Then came a natural-sized crucifix, the crucis track, a statue of Michael Archangel - patron of the community -, angels, plates and tombstones that remember parish priests, parishioners and benefactors.

Two method details. The property register mistakenly attributes the proclamation of the Marian Year to "Pope Leo XII": was Pius XIIas the municipal documentation correctly collected and the Vatican text itself confirmed. And on the number of stations of the road crucis the sources discrete - twelve according to the property record, fourteen according to others - so that no figure is fixed here.

The visit of John Paul II

El 12 September 1984during his trip to Canada, John Paul II stopped at Flatrock. The property register states that the people were chosen in part by the very existence of the grotto. The Pope He kneeled to pray before her. and, from a promontory on the other side of the road, he went to the fishing community and blessed the port ships: for the most part dories and fishing skis, fondles forming a cross. The event commemorated the two-hundredth anniversary of the official establishment of the Catholic faith in Newfoundland.

It is appropriate to be exact with the gender of the text, because it is often misquoted: the Holy See publishes what was said in Flatrock as Address to members of the fishing community, no como homilía; la única homilía papal de aquel día fue la de la misa del bicentenario en St. John’s, que no menciona Flatrock.

An honest detail that deserves to be written: the plaque of the memorial gives as date 14 September 1984. The badge's wrong. The correct date, according to the Holy See and according to the property file that transcribes that plate, is the 12 September.

The place of the fleet's blessing is today a Independent patrimonial site of the grotto, designated on the same day by the contiguous motion of the municipal plenary. The stone monument that points to it was cost with funds gathered by volunteers and was tasted by local quarry Angus Maher.

Qué se venera y quaé significa

What is honoured here is the apparition of the Virgin to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, and with her the mystery of the Immaculate Conception. It's intercession, non-worship: God is worshipped, and Mary is worshipped by asking to intercede, which always leads to Christ. The grotto promises nothing automatic; it is a place of prayer raised by a community living from the sea.

The cult is still alive. There are parish devotions during the summer months; the Legion of Mary from other parishes he gathered there to pray the rosary on the Sunday closest to the feast of the Assumption; and a annual pilgrimage, always of a penitential characterwith a walk, mass and Eucharistic procession, the date of which varies from year to year between the end of September and October. At the death of John Paul II, in April 2005, a trade in his memory was held in the grotto.

Discernment and limits of this sheet

And here it doesn't hold. Nor does it contain any documented tradition of blessing of the fleet prior to or after 1984, so that it is not affirmed.

This page does not present objects, images or practices as autonomous powers or transform a devotional tradition into historical or scientific certainty.

Location on the map

The open mapping places the point about 148 meters north-east; that of sources having authority over the designated asset has been preferred.

Para meditar y orar

Virgin of Lourdes, who you showed to a poor girl by a rock: look at those who make a living in the sea and their families, who wait on the ground. Alcanzus of your Son the patience of humble work and comfort in the losses that are not forgotten. May those who raised this grotto with their hands rest in the peace of God. Amen.
