Our Lady of Guadalupe in Chinese Communities
Chinese Marian Devotion
The devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe has found a special echo in Chinese Catholic communities, both in China and in the diaspora. The image of the brunette Virgin who appeared to San Juan Diego in Mexico has been adopted by Chinese Catholics as a symbol of Mary's universal motherhood.
The Virgin of Guadalupe and inculturation
Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in 1531 to San Juan Diego, an indigenous nahuatl, on the hill of the Tepeyac. The Virgin presented herself as a mestiza, taking on the features and the dress of local culture. This model of Marian inculturation has been an inspiration for Chinese Catholics.
The missionaries in China found in the model of Guadalupe a precedent to inculturate Marian devotion in Chinese culture. The image of a Virgin who adopts local features has been an argument for Marian representations with Chinese features.
Devotion in Chinese Communities
In the Chinese communities of the Americas, especially in Mexico, Peru and the United States, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is very popular. Chinese Catholics of Latin American origin venerate the Virgin of Guadalupe as her patron and protector.
In mainland China, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is less known, but has been growing in recent years thanks to communications and exchanges with Chinese communities abroad.
Guadalupe and Chinese Identity
The image of the Virgin of Guadalupe has been adopted by some Chinese Catholics as a symbol of Chinese Marian identity. The brunette Virgin, who appeared to an indigenous, is seen as a model of Mary's universal motherhood, which welcomes all peoples without distinction.
