History of Marian devotion in Guinea-Bissau

The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Guinea- Bisáu, although a minority in a country of Muslim majority or traditional African religions, has a significant presence among local Christian communities. Christianity has come to these lands through European missionaries since the 15th century (Portuguese, French, Spanish), and the figure of Mary was one of the pillars of evangelization. Marian apparitions in Africa, like Kibeho's in Rwanda (1981- 1989), have boosted Marian devotion throughout the continent.

In Guinea- Bisáu, the Virgin is venerated under various calls, many of them introduced by the missionaries: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, Our Lady of Lourdes. The local Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary, processions and patronal parties, which are expressions of an incarnate faith in African culture.

The Lusophone Marian heritage in Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau, a small West African nation with a strong Portuguese heritage, has a Catholic community that comprises approximately 20% of the population. Portuguese evangelization began in the 15th century, but it wasn't until the 19th century that Franciscan and Holy Spirit missionaries established permanent missions. The Virgin Mary was introduced to the Balanta, Fulani, and Mandinka peoples under the title of Our Lady of Fatima, a major Portuguese Marian devotion. The Diocese of Bissau, established in 1977, is based at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima, built in 1954 with a design that blends Portuguese colonial architecture with African elements.

The civil war of 1998-1999 devastated the country, but Marian devotion remained strong. The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, present in the country since the 1960s, have been instruments of Marian devotion through their work in schools and hospitals. In the town of Cuntum Madina Nhoma, on the outskirts of Bissau, the sisters run a Marian center where the faithful come to pray the Rosary and participate in spiritual retreats. The feast of Our Lady of Fatima (May 13) is celebrated with great solemnity throughout the country, with processions through the streets of Bissau and the inland villages, in which the image of the Virgin is carried on a platform accompanied by songs in Portuguese and Creole.

Our Lady of the Assumption of Bolama

Party: 15 August · Place: Bolama (Islas Bijagós, Guinea-Bisáu)

On the island of Bolama, the former capital of Portuguese Guinea, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption stands as a silent witness to colonial history. Built in 1870 by the Portuguese, the neoclassical church was once one of the grandest in West Africa. Today, though partially in ruins, the church is still used by the local Catholic community for Marian celebrations. Every August 15, the faithful from the Bijagós Islands make a pilgrimage by canoe to Bolama for the Mass of the Assumption, a tradition dating back to the 19th century. The image of Our Lady of the Assumption, an 18th-century Portuguese carving, is venerated as the protector of the archipelago's fishermen and sailors.

🙏 Our Lady of the Assumption of Bolama, pray for us.

Our Lady of the Rosary of Bafatah

Party: 7 October · Place: Bafatá (Guinea-Bisáu, Guinea-Bisáu)

In Bafatá, the country's second-largest city and capital of the Bafatá region, the parish of Our Lady of the Rosary serves a Catholic community composed primarily of Fulani and Mandinka ethnic groups. The church, built in 1962 by Portuguese Franciscan missionaries, is a simple yet welcoming building with adobe walls and a corrugated iron roof. The image of Our Lady of the Rosary, a wooden carving from Guinea, was crafted by a local artisan in the 1970s and depicts the Virgin Mary with African features, dressed in capulana fabric (a traditional textile from Mozambique and Guinea). Every October 7th, the community celebrates the patron saint's feast day with drum music and traditional dances.

🙏 Our Lady of the Rosary of Bafatá, pray for us.

Guinea-Bissau, one of the world's poorest countries, has seen the Catholic Church play a crucial role in education and healthcare. The Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception run schools and health centers throughout the country, bringing Mary's love to those most in need. The feast of Our Lady of Fatima (May 13) is celebrated nationwide with processions through the streets of Bissau and inland villages. The Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima visits rural parishes throughout the year, bringing comfort and hope to the most isolated communities.

Music plays a fundamental role in Marian devotion in Guinea-Bissau. The hymns in honor of Our Lady of Fatima, composed in Guinean Creole (Kriol) by local musicians, are a unique expression of the inculturation of the faith. The "Missa da Virgem" (Mass of the Virgin), composed by Father José María Neves, combines Gregorian chant with traditional African rhythms such as gumbé and djambadón. This Mass is performed every May 13th in the Bissau Cathedral, attracting worshippers of all faiths who come to hear the beauty of Guinean Marian music.
