History of Marian devotion in Honduras
The devotion to the Virgin Mary in Honduras comes with the first European evangelizers and is deeply rooted in popular piety. The Marian advocacy brought by the missionaries - the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of the Merced - merged with local religious sensitivity, giving rise to unique expressions of faith.
The Marian shrines of Honduras are centres for pilgrimage and community meeting. The Virgin Mary is venerated as a patron of many localities and as a protector of families. The patron parties in honor of Mary are manifestations of a living faith that is transmitted from generation to generation.
The Virgin of Suyapa, a small size of wood of 6.5 cm in height, was found in 1747 by the peasant Alejandro Colindres on the hill of Suyapa. The image, which represents the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, was declared patron of Honduras by Pope Pius XII in 1954 and canonically crowned in 2017. The Suyapa Basilica, built between 1954 and 2000, is the largest church in Honduras. The Feast of the Virgin of Suyapa on February 3 is the country's most important religious celebration, with massive pilgrimages from all the dioceses.
