Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Marian icon of Markopil is venerated in the Church of the Ascension of Christ of Markopil, the town of the present oblast of Leópolis, Ukraine. The Greek-Catholic Eparchia of Sokal- Zhovkva includes it among its miraculous icons and places the image in the church of the Ascension of the people. The map uses 49.8597, 25.2868, the location reference obtained from OpenStreetMap / Nominatim, with precision locality. It is not presented as GPS of the altar or image.
Documented history
The Sokal- Zhovkva Eparchia page dates the Markopil icon between the 16th and 17th centuries and identifies it as a miraculous image located in the Church of the Ascension of Christ. The same page lists the place next to other sanctuaries and eparchia pilgrimage icons. This makes it possible to affirm the present existence of the ecclesial cult and its insertion into the life of a Greek-Catholic constituency; it does not allow for the reconstruction of the name of the painter alone, the exact date or a complete record of each given miracle.
The local information preserved about the church of Markopil recalls that in the ancient temple a miraculous image was venerated and that the church of Ascension is in an elevation outside the nucleus of the town. It is a useful source for the context of the place, but its historical details are kept with caution when they are not confirmed by a primary document or by an independent dating. The sheet does not add construction or coronation dates that are not sufficiently recorded.
Tradition
The Markopil tradition is that of a Marian image linked to the parish community and to the local pilgrimage. The qualifier "miraculous" belongs to the language of the epoch and the memory of the sanctuary. The faithful can honor Mary and ask for her intercession before God; that veneration is not worship and does not turn the image into a divinity.
Legend and limits of the record
There is no individual account of the apparition, a list of curations examined or a decree declaring a phenomenon associated with Markopil supernatural in the consulted epochial source. That is why this fact sheet does not invent an apparition or present the miracles attributed as proven medical facts. What is clear is the ecclesial identification of the icon, its place of custody and its presence among the pilgrimage destinations of the epoch.
Ecclesial State
It's marked. permitted veneration in the sense of a public veneration integrated into a Greek-Catholic epoch and associated with a parish church. This label does not amount to a statement of the supernatural of all accounts or to a no obstat specific to the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith. The fact sheet thus respects both the reality of the cult and the limits of what the source allows to affirm.
Anecdotes and stories
Markopil's history shows how an advocation can be preserved in a small community, within an equial network of icons and pilgrimage places. The name is attached to the church of Ascension and to the memory of an image venerated by the faithful. The location reference of the map avoids false accuracy and leaves open the possibility of completing the building point in the future if a reliable temple coordinate appears.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Christ, intercede before God for the community of Markopil and for all who seek comfort before the sacred images. Teach us to live faith with truth, to distinguish tradition from proven history and to always walk towards Jesus Christ. Amen.
