Marian devotion
Where is he?
The advocation of Our Lady of Okhtyrka, also transcribed Akhtyr, was born in the tradition linked to Okhtyrka, in the present Ukraine. The coordinate that is published here, 49.9917, 36.2288, corresponds to the Orthodox building of the protection cathedral of the protection monastery in Járkov, according to OpenStreetMap. The precision is verified_building: the point places a copy and a documented place of worship, not the original town of Okhtyrka or the inner whereabouts of the original icon.
The distinction is necessary because the Orthodox source explains that the original was stolen in 1905 and that in 1995 a copy was taken to the protection cathedral of Okhtyrka; it also states that in 2010 the icon considered original was presented to the convent of Novodévichi of the Resurrection in Moscow. The map retains the cartographed place of Járkov without making it the place of origin.
Documented history and tradition
The story transmitted by the Orthodox Church in America places the traditional finding on July 2, 1739, when the priest Basilio Danilov had found a luminous image while working in a field near the church of the sleep of Okhtyrka. The source tells that the icon remained at home for three years and that, after a dream attributed to the Mother of God, it was used to wash the image and the waters were preserved.
Devotional accounts claim that the water was given to people sick of malaria and fever, including the daughter of the priest and the son of a restorer named John. The source indicates that the reports were investigated at least three times and that the Holy Synod declared the icon miraculous in 1751. The fact sheet presents this sequence as the history and the orthodox recognition transmitted by the source, without turning every known healing into an independent medical diagnosis.
It also includes the construction of a stone church in Okhtyrka, consecrated in 1768. The source recalls processions between the Cathedral of Protection and the monastery of the Most Holy Trinity of Okhtyrka, as well as the multiplication of copies before the theft of the original. These data explain why the advocation may be present in more than one place without each copy being the same historical object.
Legend and limits of the record
The dreams of the priest, the luminous finding, the healing and the later destiny of the original belong to the Orthodox tradition documented by an Orthodox ecclesial source. The claim that water cured diseases is part of the reports preserved by this tradition; it is not offered here as a contemporary medical certification. It is also not claimed that the copy of Járkov is the original or that the point of the map reproduces the site of the 1739 experience.
Ecclesial State
The state is marked as another Church. The source describes an icon recognition as miraculous by the Holy Orthodox Synod in 1751. It is not a Catholic approval and it is not appropriate to automatically transfer this category to the discernment of the Catholic Church. This document respects the documented Orthodox cult and keeps separate the recognition of that Church, the traditional origin of the image and the status of the copies.
Anecdotes and stories
The biography of the icon is marked by displacements: from Okhtyrka through the history of its churches, the theft of 1905, the apparition of the original in collections and its presentation in Moscow, along with the copy returned to Ukraine in 1995. The existence of several images explains that Okhtyrka's name does not always amount to a single material piece. This is why the title expressly identifies the copy linked to Járkov.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, intercedes before God for Ukraine, for those suffering from disease and for the communities that guard their sacred images. Give us caution to recognize what is contained and charity to accompany those who seek comfort, always oriented towards Christ. Amen.
