The Catholic Church in Lhasa, Tibet
Lhasa, Tibet, China
Lhasa, the "City of the Gods" and historical capital of Tibet, is home to one of the smallest and most unique Catholic communities in China. The presence of the Catholic faith on the roof of the world is a testament to the universality of the Church.
History of the Christian presence in Tibet
The first Christians to arrive in Tibet were Capuchin missionaries in the 17th century. In 1707, Fathers Ippolito Desideri and Orazio della Penna established a mission in Lhasa that lasted until 1745. These missionaries studied Tibetan and Buddhism, leaving behind valuable writings on Tibetan culture.
In the 19th century, missionaries from the Paris Foreign Missions Society (MEP) unsuccessfully attempted to establish a permanent mission in Tibet. Tibetan and Chinese authorities systematically prevented foreign missionaries from entering the region.
The chapel of Lhasa
Currently, there is no formal Catholic church in Lhasa. However, the city's small Catholic community meets discreetly in private homes to celebrate the Eucharist. The community consists mainly of Han Chinese officials and some Tibetan converts.
Tibet and the Catholic faith
The Catholic presence in Tibet is extremely delicate due to the region's political and religious situation. The Catholic community must act with discretion and caution. However, the faith has survived despite enormous difficulties.
Tibet today
Today, the Catholic community in Tibet is extremely small. The faithful meet privately and keep the flame of faith alive in one of the most isolated regions of the world.
