Church of Our Lady of Victories of Tetouan

Tetouan, Morocco

The Church of Our Lady of Victories is a Neo-Mudéjar style Catholic church located in Tetouan. The current complex was designed and built during the 1920s, when the city was the capital of the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco, and the church and mission were inaugurated on January 1, 1927.

History

The project was designed by Carlos Ovilo Castelo and was built in the Ensanche district of Tetouan, next to the present-day Moulay El Mehdi Square. The land was acquired in 1921 for the Obra Pía de los Santos Lugares (Pious Foundation of the Holy Places); other local sources mention the involvement of benefactor Esteban Emilio Feliu Esquivel. Heritage documentation places the construction process between 1922 and 1927.

The current temple continues the mission of Tetuán established by the Franciscans in 1860. The community first used worship spaces in the old city and, decades later, moved the parish church and mission house to the Ensanche.

Neo-Mudejar architecture

The church, with three naves, measures approximately 39 by 19 meters. Carlos Ovilo employed a Neo-Mudéjar style; architectural studies of the Protectorate period indicate spatial affinities with Santa María la Blanca in Toledo. Its presence must be understood within the historical urban planning of the Ensanche district.
