The Catholic Churches of Yinchuan

Yinchuan, the capital of the autonomous region of Ningxia, is located next to the Yellow River. The region of Ningxia, a Muslim majority (hui), houses a tiny Catholic community.

History of evangelization in Ningxia

The Catholic presence in Ningxia is very low. The first Catholic missionaries arrived in the region in the early 20th century. The Congregation of the Divine Word (SVD) was the main driver of evangelization in Ningxia.

Evangelization was difficult due to Muslim predominance and extreme weather conditions. The missionaries established small communities in Yinchuan and the main cities.

The Iglesia de Yinchuan

The small Catholic church of Yinchuan was built in the mid-20th century. The building, modest and discreet, has served as the centre of Catholic life in the region.

Persecution and survival

During the Cultural Revolution, the church of Yinchuan was closed. However, faith survived in the underground. After the religious opening of the 1980s, the church was restored.

Naxia today

At present, the Catholic community of Ningxia is extremely small but faithful. The church celebrates regular masses.
