La tradición cuenta que la imagen original de la Virgen fue traída por los portugueses en el siglo XVI. Cuando los ingleses expulsaron a los portugueses, los fieles escondieron la imagen en el mar. Días después, la imagen fue encontrada flotando en la playa de Bandra. Los fieles la llevaron a una capilla en lo alto de un monte, de ahí el nombre «Mount Mary».
Every September the feast of the Bandra is held, with a procession that runs through the streets of the neighborhood.
