Cathedral of Santa María Asunta and San José de Ruteng (Flores)
On the highlands of Manggarai, on the island of Flores, the Cathedral of Ruteng is jointly dedicated to Santa María Asunta and San José. The Catholics began to build it in 1929 and finished it in 1931; it has been the episcopal seat since 1951, elevated to the diocese in 1961.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- He heads one of the most Catholic dioceses in the world: in 2010, more than 670,000 Catholics, around 94% of the population of Manggarai.
- The diocese of Ruteng is known as the "diocese of the thousand congregations" and has been called the "promised land of the vocations" of Indonesia.
- Every year, from 10 to 15 August, the diocese celebrates the Golo Koe festival in honor of the Assumption of Mary, with solemn Mass on the 15th, which promotes Flores as an international pilgrimage destination.
- It belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Ende, in the Catholic heart of the Indonesian archipelago.
