It is the seat of the Archdiocese of the Mother of God in Moscow, metropolitan constituency of the Latin Catholic Church in Russia, within the structure of four dioceses erected in 2002.
The Catholic presence in Moscow dates back to at least the 18th century, linked to Polish, Lithuanian, German and French diplomats and immigrants. The present temple was built in the early 20th century as a great Latin parish church for the growing Catholic community of the capital. After the Revolution and the persecutions, the building was confiscated in Soviet times and intended for profane uses, while the Catholic community was severely repressed. In the 1990s, after the fall of the USSR, the temple was returned to the Catholic Church, restored and erected as a cathedral of the new ecclesiastical constituency, which would culminate in 2002 with the creation of the archdiocese.
