Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Immaculate Conception of Santa Marta is linked to the Basilica Cathedral of Santa Marta, in the historical center of the city, department of Magdalena, Colombia. The Diocese of Santa Marta describes the image of the Immaculate, exposed to public veneration and recalls its solemn canonical coronation in 1975. The OpenStreetMap consultation identifies the Basilica Cathedral Square, way 233437685, next to the temple. As the search used did not return the unambiguous geometry of the building, the map uses 11.2435, -74.2111 with precision locality: is the surroundings of the cathedral, not an exact coordinate of the image.
Documented history
The official documentation of the Diocese of Santa Marta integrates the Immaculate Conception into the religious history of the city. His page on the cathedral records that on July 29, 1975, the solemn canonical coronation of the image took place, made by nuncio Angelo Palmas on behalf of Pope Paul VI. The same chronology shows that the image also received a civil decoration from the Republic of Colombia. These data document an ecclesial act and a public expression of devotion; they should not be confused with the approval of an apparition or a miracle.
At the opening of the Marian Year 2025, the diocese further recalled that in 1754 the Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception was declared the Captain of the Port and Governor of the city. The fact sheet retains this statement as a fact of the religious and civic history transmitted by the diocese. No previous chronology is added which the sources consulted do not require.
The cathedral, its chapels and the image are part of the Marian memory of Santa Marta. The diocesan source mentions the image that is venerated publicly and presents it as a witness to the history of the samariums. The continuity of veneration is expressed in the liturgy, in the celebrations of the diocese and in the prayer of the faithful.
Tradition
Local devotion contemplates Mary as the Immaculate Mother of God and asks for her intercession. Samaria tradition relates to the protection of the city and the life of its port; this relationship is preserved as a religious and civic memory, not as an affirmation that Mary is a goddess or that she should receive worship. In the Catholic faith, Mary is venerated and asked to lead to Christ.
Legend
There is no specific Marian apparition associated with this image or an individual miracle recognized in the cross-cutting institutional sources. Canonical coronation, public veneration and the title of the cathedral document the veneration of the Church, but they are not a pronunciation on a private revelation. The extraordinary stories that are not supported by a file remain as tradition or as unestablished.
Ecclesial State
The state is recorded as permitted veneration. The Diocese of Santa Marta documents the image exposed to public veneration and canonical coronation held on July 29, 1975. This state describes the Marian cult and the liturgical presence of the image; it does not claim that there is an approved apparition or a recognized miracle.
Anecdotes and stories
The 1975 coronation is the most precise milestone in the official chronology consulted. The celebration was presided over on behalf of the Pope by nuncio Angelo Palmas, and the image also received the Boyacá Cross according to the history published by the diocese. In 2025 the diocese again presented the Immaculate as a reference to the memory of Santa Marta. No figures are added of pilgrims or details of ceremonies that are not documented in the above sources.
Prayer
Immaculate Conception of Santa Marta, pray for the city, for the families of Magdalena and for those who work in the sea and in the port. He intercedes before Jesus Christ for those who need comfort and hope. Teach us to live with a clean heart, to serve the neighbor and to guard the faith received. Amen.

Documentary extension
The Diocese of Santa Marta presents the Immaculate Conception within the religious and institutional memory of the city. On his page on the cathedral he points out that the advocation was declared in 1754 Captain of the Port and Governor of Santa Marta, a historical formula of patronage and protection that must be understood in its devotional and civil context, not as a declaration of supernatural.
The same diocese describes Santa Marta as the seat of an ecclesial jurisdiction of great antiquity and explains that its historical territory was much wider than the present one. This story helps to understand why a Marian advocation linked to the cathedral also appears in the memory of the Magdalena communities, but does not allow to attribute to this document all the Marian advocations or sanctuaries of the ancient diocese. The preserved point corresponds only to the cartographic environment of the Basilica Cathedral of Santa Marta.
In 2025 the diocese called a Marian Year for the fifth centenary of the city's foundation. The call presented the encounter as a time of prayer, devotion and ecclesial unity, with the Immaculate as a reference to the memory of Santa Marta. It is a recent evidence of diocesan veneration and pastoral; it does not add an extraordinary approval or a recognized miracle.
