Parish of the Sacred Heart of Port Sudan
In Port Sudan, the great port city of the Red Sea, the Catholic Church is present through the parish of the Sacred Heart, belonging to the archdiocese of Khartoum. In the years of the war that has besieged Sudan since 2023, this community has become a refuge of faith and charity for thousands of displaced people coming to the coast.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The parish belongs to the archdiocese of Khartoum, the metropolitan headquarters that covers all of Sudan along with its suffranea, the diocese of El Obeid, and whose cathedral is that of San Mateo in the capital.
- The Catholic presence in eastern Sudan is the result of the work of the Commonian missionaries, heirs of Saint Daniel Comboni, for whom Port Sudan has been from the ancient place of passage and mission in their travels around the country.
- During the war started in 2023, the Comboni College of Port Sudan opened a care centre for terminal patients, and in a Pascual Vigil of those painful years sixteen new Christians received baptism in the city.
- The parish of the Sacred Heart, with its parish priest at the front, has served as a channel for international humanitarian aid for thousands of children displaced by the conflict, feeding the hungry in Christ's name.
