Marian devotion

A shelter during the persecution
Suryichigol was a Christian village hidden in a remote valley at the foot of the Guksabong. Their isolation offered protection to Catholic and missionary families during the persecutions of the Joseon dynasty. After the martyrdom of St. Andrew Kim Taegon in September 1846, Bishop José Ambrosio Ferreol and Antonio Daveluy sought refuge in the area.
The fragility of that community did not lead to confinement, but to a wider spiritual union. In a humble house in the valley, clergy and faithful entrusted the persecuted Church to Mary and began a stable work of prayer.
The Confraternity of the Heart of Mary
On November 2, 1846, the Brotherhood of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of Mary was established in Suryichigol. The association followed the work founded in 1836 by Father Charles- Éléonore Dufriche- Desgenettes in the Parisian church of Our Lady of the Victories. The Korean community asked to be registered with that international network.
The faithful gathered on Sundays to ask for the peace of the Church of Joseon and the conversion of sinners. The initiative is considered the beginning of the Marian devotion organized in the Korean Church. It was not an apparition, but an ecclesial act of consecration, communion and perseverance.
From oblivion to recovery
Over the decades, the exact identification of the old settlement was lost. The historical research made it possible to find it again in the 1980s and since 1985 it began its development as a sanctuary. In 1990, the contemplative monastery and a retreat house were completed; later, paths, prayer spaces and reception were made available.
The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary of Mirinae, spiritual heirs of that brotherhood, established their general house there. The sanctuary thus maintains a living continuity between the prayer of the persecuted and contemporary consecrated life.
A Marian shrine
The Episcopal Conference of Korea expressly includes it as "Marian Shrine of Suryichigol" within the diocese of Daejeon. The Korean Tourism Organization also describes it as a sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary. This documented condition allows it to be distinguished from other Korean historical places that have a Marian image or grotto, but whose main identity is different.
The enclosure invites you to go through the mysteries of the Rosary and the pains of Mary, celebrate the Eucharist and make retreat. The mountain landscape retains the silence that in the 19th century protected clandestine prayer.
Spirituality of the Immaculate Heart
Mary's heart symbolizes her full dedication to God, her contemplative memory of the Word and her compassion for the Church. In Suryichigol that spirituality took a concrete form: to remain united, to pray for those who persecuted Christians and to entrust the future to grace.
The association with Our Lady of Victories recalls that Christian victory does not come from political power. It is born of the conversion, fidelity and charity of those who remain with Christ even in the trial.
Verified location
The episcopal inventory and the Gongju administrations identify the sanctuary in 544 Yongsubonggap-gil, Sinpung-myeon. The official chart of Visit Korea publishes the point 36.5199668088634, 126.89654454315 (WGS-84), corresponding to the valley complex and not to the centre of the town.
