Iglesia de la Divina Misericordia de Erdenet (Mongolia)
In Erdenet, the third city of Mongolia, about 385 kilometres north-west of Ulan Bator, the Church opened in 2016 a new mission dedicated to the Divine Mercy, in the middle of the Jubilee of Mercy. It is one of the few Catholic parishes in the country outside the capital, within the only apostolic prefecture that covers all of Mongolia.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- Erdenet's mission was erected in 2016, during the Jubilee Year of Mercy convened by Pope Francis, and from that Jubilee he received his title as Divine Mercy.
- It is a newly born Church: in its first months the community already celebrated its first baptisms and a marriage, and adults and young people went to catechesis; in 2017 a baptized adult received the Eucharist at the parish feast.
- The missionaries of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (CCM, Scheut) have been working in Erdenet since 2002, where they opened My Home Kindergarten for poor children in the city.
- The parish of the Divine Mercy is among those of the Apostolic prefecture of Ulan Bator, which Cardinal Giorgio Marengo, a missionary of the Consolata, guides: a flock of about 1,500 Catholics throughout the country.
Divine Mercy
The young mission of the Divine Mercy of Erdenet, born at the Jubilee of 2016, is one of the most recent outbreaks of the Church in Mongolia. In the northern mining city, a small community grows step by step with its first baptisms, catechesis and the silent work of the missionaries.
