The persecution of Christians
In 2014, the Islamic State conquered Mossul and destroyed all the churches. Christians were forced to convert, pay the jizya tax or flee. Thousands of Christian families lost everything.
Tradition tells that when Christians fled Mossul, the Virgin Mary appeared on the way to guide them. Christian refugees say they saw a bright light leading them to Erbil, where they found refuge.
