Qaraqosh, also called Baghdeda, is the largest Christian city in Iraq. The Chaldean Christians venerate the Virgin Mary as a protector of her city.
The city that resisted
When the Islamic State advanced to Qaraqosh in 2014, Christians resisted for days. Young people formed militias to protect families. In the end, they had to flee, but the Virgin protected them in the flight.
In 2017, when the city was released, Christians again found their houses destroyed and their desecrated churches. But in the church of St. George, the image of the Virgin Mary had survived intact. The faithful cried with joy.
