History of Marian devotion in Marshall Islands

Christianity reached the Marshall Islands in the hands of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelizers, was rooted in the local Christian communities, which found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.

The Marian advocacy in Marshall Islands reflects the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. The small Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the Marian parties.

Marian faith in the Marshalese atolls

The Marshall Islands, a country of atolls and reefs scattered in the Central Pacific, received the Catholic faith from the missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the late 19th century. The Catholic Church is a minority in a country of Protestant majority (Congregational Church of the Marshall Islands), but devotion to the Virgin Mary has remained alive in the Catholic communities of Majuro, Ebeye and Jaluit. The Asunción Cathedral in Majuro, built in 1966, is the spiritual center of the country's approximately 5,000 Catholics. Its architectural design, adapted to the tropical climate with large windows and a ceiling inclined to resist typhoons, houses an image of the Virgin of the Assumption donated by the Church of Hawaii.

The Marian history of the Marshall Islands is closely linked to the experience of the United States nuclear tests in the Bikini atoll and in Enebetak between 1946 and 1958. Many Catholic families were displaced from their islands of origin, and in their exile they found comfort in the prayer of the Rosary. On the island of Ebeye, where a large displaced population is concentrated, the parish of the Assumption became a place of spiritual encounter and resistance. Every year, on August 15, Marshalese Catholics celebrate the Assumption with a canoe procession that runs through the Majuro lagoon, blessing the waters and reminding the ancestors who crossed the ocean carrying the faith.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Ebeye

Party: 8 December · Place: Ebeye (Kwajalein, Islas Marshall)

On the island of Ebeye, one of the most dense population centres in the Pacific, the parish of the Sacred Heart serves a vibrant Catholic community composed mainly of marshals displaced from the atolls affected by nuclear tests. The church, built in 1968, is a simple but welcoming building, decorated with shells and traditional Marshalese fabrics. The image of the Sacred Heart of Mary presides over the main altar, and the faithful have the custom of leaving offerings of flowers of frangipani and young coconuts at their feet as a sign of gratitude. The parish organizes a young Marian camp every summer, where young people learn about the history of the Church in the Marshall Islands and deepen devotion to the Virgin.

"Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Ebeye, pray for us.

Maria Estrella del Mar de Jaluit

Party: 15 August · Place: Jaluit (Islas Marshall, Islas Marshall)

In the atoll of Jaluit, the former administrative capital of the South Pacific during the German and Japanese period, is the Catholic mission of Maria Estrella del Mar. Founded by the missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1902, the mission was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in the 1950s by the Marshalese faithful themselves. The advocation of Mary Estrella del Mar (Marian Jedjab, in Marshales) is especially loved by the fishermen and sailors of the atoll, who entrust to the Virgin their traverses through the ocean. Every year, in the feast of the Assumption, the image of the Virgin is carried in procession by the inner lagoon of the atoll in a ponton decorated with garlands of flowers.

Por María Estrella del Mar de Jaluit, pray for us.

Our Lady of the Rosary of Kwajalein

Party: 7 October · Place: Kwajalein (Islas Marshall, Islas Marshall)

In the atoll of Kwajalein, the largest in the world and American military base, the Catholic chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary serves the community of Marshali workers and military personnel. The chapel, built in 1965, is a modern building with a white coral altar and an image of the Virgin of the Rosary brought from Hawaii. The Catholic community of Kwajalein, though transient, maintains an active life of Marian prayer, with the prayer of the Rosary every Thursday night. The feast of October 7 is celebrated with a mass concelebrated by the military chaplains and the Marshalese priests, in a gesture of unity between the local community and the base.

"Our Lady of the Rosary of Kwajalein, pray for us.

Catholic life in the Marshall Islands faces unique challenges due to the geographical dispersion of atolls. The priests travel on a motor boat from island to island, bringing the sacraments and the image of the Virgin to the most isolated communities. The tradition of the "Ship of Mary" (Marian Ship) is a moving expression of this reality: an image of the pilgrim Virgin travels from atoll to atoll, visiting families for one week each, carrying comfort and blessings. This tradition, initiated in 1985 by the Bishop of the Marshall Islands, has greatly strengthened Marian devotion in the country.
