Our Lady of Nagasaki: the martyrs
Nagasaki, Japan
The martyrs of Nagasaki and the Virgin Mary.
In 1597, 26 Christians were crucified in Nagasaki. Among them were Franciscans, Jesuits and Japanese laity. The Virgin Mary was the mother who comforted them in martyrdom.
The martyrs of Nagasaki
The martyrs sang Psalm 51 as they went up to the mountain where they would be crucified. Tradition tells that the Virgin Mary appeared on the mountain to comfort them.
In 1862, Pope Pius IX canonized the martyrs of Nagasaki. Every February 6, Japanese Catholics celebrate their feast.
