Marian devotion
Our Lady of Fatima in Almaty
Almaty, Kazakhstan
Kazakh Catholics venerate the Virgin of Fatima as a protector of the faith in the steppe.
In Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan, the Catholic community venerates the Virgin of Fatima in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. The Polish and German missionaries carried this devotion when they returned after Siberian exile.
La fe que sobrevivió al Gulag
During the Soviet era, thousands of Catholics were deported to Kazakhstan: Poles, Ukrainians, Volga Germans. In the Gulag's work camps, they secretly prayed the Rosary. Tradition tells that in the Karaganda camp, prisoners hid a small image of Fatima inside their clothes.
When the camps closed, the survivors built clandestine churches in their homes. The Virgin of Fatima was the mother who accompanied them in exile.
