Lake Issyk-Kul is a sacred lake in Kyrgyzstan, surrounded by snowy mountains. The Kyrgyz pastors say that the Virgin Mary appeared on the waters of the lake to protect the Christians who lived on their shores.
The legend of the lake
The legend is that a Kyrgyz shepherd named Almaz was lost with his flock during a storm in the mountains near the Issyk- Kul. He prayed the Rosary and saw a bright light on the lake. It was the Virgin, who led him to a safe haven.
Since then, the Kyrgyz pastors have venerated the Virgin of the Issyk- Kul. They think she protects those who live near the sacred lake.
