Marian advocacy of Kyrgyzstan
A Church born of exile in the mountains of Central Asia

Kyrgyzstan is a mountainous country in Central Asia with some 6.5 million inhabitants. The Catholic community, of approximately 1,000 faithful, is descended from Poles, Germans and Lithuanians deported during the Stalinist era. Organized in three parishes, the Church has had an official presence since 1991. Since then, religious freedom has allowed the rebirth of a Marian faith that was secretly transmitted for generations.
♪ Wonders and Marian anecdotes of Kyrgyzstan
- Polish Deportees and the Secret Faith: During the 1930s and 40s, Stalin deported thousands of Poles, Ukrainians and Germans to Kyrgyzstan. Many Catholics kept their faith secret for decades, transmitting the rosary from parents to children as a treasure. There were no priests, but the mothers taught to pray to their children, thus preserving the flame of Marian devotion.
- The parish of Biskek is reborn: After 70 years without an official Catholic church, in 1991 the small community of Biskek began to meet. In 1996, the Church of San Miguel Archangel, the country's first Catholic church since the Soviet era, was built. It was a moment of great emotion for the descendants of deportees who saw their publicly recognized faith.
- La Virgen de Karakol: In Karakol, on the banks of Lake Issyk-Kul, the Church of the Mother of God of Mercy is a meeting point. Every 8 December the faithful walk from different peoples to honor the Immaculate Conception. The community is multi-ethnic: Kyrgyz, German, Polish and Korean pray together.
- Missionaries of Charity in Biskek: The Sisters of Mother Teresa of Calcutta have had a house in Biskek since 1997. They tend to the poorest and pray the rosary daily. His presence has strengthened Marian devotion among the faithful and has testified to the love of Christ to all Kyrgyz society.
- Pope John Paul II and Kyrgyzstan: In 1996, Pope John Paul II entrusted to the Virgin Mary the Catholics of Central Asia, and the Kyrgyz felt especially remembered. There is an image of John Paul II praying to the Virgin in the parish of Biskek that recalls this gesture of closeness.
