History of Marian devotion in Kiribati

Christianity reached the islands of Kiribati by the hand of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelizers, was rooted in the local Christian communities, which found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.

The Marian advocacy in Kiribati reflects the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. The small Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the Marian parties.

Marian devotion in the Republic of Kiribati

Kiribati, a country of 33 atolls scattered along the equator in the Central Pacific, was evangelized by the missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the late 19th century. Catholicism was deeply rooted in the islands of the equatorial line, especially in Tarawa, Abaiang and Nonouti. The Virgin Mary is venerated under the title of the Sacred Heart, an advocation that the missionaries introduced as part of her foundational charism. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in South Tarawa, built in 1960 with coral and cement, is the center of the diocese of Tarawa and Nauru. Every 7 October, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated with special devotion, as the Rosary was the first prayer that the missionaries taught the islanders.

The Marian history of Kiribati is marked by the heroic work of the missionaries of the Sacred Heart, who were traveling in atoll gulet in atoll carrying the faith. On May 10, 1888, the first missionaries landed in Nonouti, and the first mass held on the island was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Kiribatí oral tradition retains the account of how the islanders, seeing the image of the Sacred Heart of Mary, exclaimed "Te Atua Maria!" (God Mary!), initiating a devotion that has been transmitted to this day. Gilbertese culture, with its strong emphasis on community and respect for the elderly, found in Mary a perfect model of the "kain te aomata" (family person), and the prayer of the Rosary was naturally integrated into the daily life of the villages.

Our Lady of the Perpetual Help of Abaiang

Party: 27 June · Place: Aibaang (Kiribati, Kiribati)

In the Abaiang atoll, north of Tarawa, the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief is one of the most active in Kiribati. The church was built in 1975 by the local community with coral blocks and coconut wood, following the traditional design of the "maniaba" (Kiribatis meeting houses). The image of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief, a reproduction of the Byzantine icon donated by the Church of Australia, is venerated with special affection. The June 27 party attracts faithful from all the atolls of the north, who arrive by boat to participate in the ninth, the procession and the traditional games that include canoe racing and cooking competitions.

Maria Reina de Tabiteuea

Party: 22 August · Place: Tabiteuea (Kiribati, Kiribati)

Tabiteuea, the largest atoll in Kiribati, houses a Catholic community that venerates Mary under the title of Mary Reina (Mary te Uea). The church of Maria Reina in Utiroa, built in 1962, is a unique building that combines ecclesial architecture with local materials: its walls are carved coral and its roof of pandanus straw. The image of Mary Reina, crowned with flowers of frangipani, presides over the main altar. The feast of Mary Reina (August 22) is the patron celebration of Tabiteuea, and brings together the faithful of both islands of the atoll (north and south) in a show of unity that transcends the traditional tribal divisions. The procession runs through the narrow strip of land that unites the two parts of the atoll.

Praise Mary Queen of Tabiteuea, pray for us.

Kiribati, the country that covers the four hemispheres of the world, has a diocese that also includes Nauru, the Pacific phosphorus island. The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in South Tarawa serves as a spiritual center for both nations. The Marian devotion in Kiribati has been reinforced by the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1995, during which the Pontiff crowned the image of Our Lady of the Rosary as patron of the country. The October 7 maritime procession, in which the image of the Virgin is carried by boat from island to island, is one of the most loved celebrations by the Kiribatis, who see in Mary the Star that guides the sailors across the vast Pacific ocean.

The diocese of Tarawa and Nauru, erected in 1979, covers Kiribati and the Republic of Nauru. The present Bishop, Monsignor Koru Tito, has promoted the construction of a new cathedral of the Sacred Heart in South Tarawa, which will be consecrated in 2027 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the diocese. The new cathedral, designed in the form of a tridacna shell (a giant mollusc typical of the Pacific), symbolizes the Church that welcomes all the peoples of the sea. The image of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, carved in coconut wood by Kiribati artisans, will preside over the main altar of this new temple.
