Our Lady of the Baltic
The image of Our Lady of the Baltic is a wooden carving depicting the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, surrounded by ships and lighthouses. Tradition says that the Virgin appeared to a fisherman from Aarhus during a terrible storm in the Kattegat.

Local anecdotes
The inhabitants of Aarhus recount that during the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, the city's Catholics hid the image of Our Lady of the Baltic in a cellar to prevent its destruction. The image was rediscovered two hundred years later during renovation work.
