The Orhei rock art complex
The Orhei Vechi cave complex is one of Moldova's most sacred sites. Carved into the limestone rock on the banks of the Răut River, this cave monastery has been inhabited by monks since the 13th century. The chapels carved into the rock house Marian frescoes dating back to the medieval period.
The Cave of the Virgin
At the heart of the complex lies a cave dedicated to the Virgin Mary, where Orthodox monks have prayed continuously for centuries. The image of the Virgin, painted in fresco on the cave wall, has withstood the test of time and invasions.

Devotions and traditions
The faithful of Moldova flock to Orhei to ask for the protection of the Virgin Mary in times of difficulty. Tradition says that the monks who lived in the caves never suffered hunger or disease thanks to the intercession of the Mother of God.
