The Virgin of Vardzia
Vardzia, Georgia
In the rock-carved cave monastery of Vardzia, the Virgin Mary has been venerated for eight centuries as the protector of monks and pilgrims.
The Vardzia cave monastery
Vardzia is a monastic complex carved into the volcanic rock of Mount Erusheti in southern Georgia. Founded in the 12th century by Queen Tamar, the complex boasts over 600 rooms, chapels, refectories, and cellars, all hewn from the stone.
The Chapel of the Assumption
In the heart of Vardzia stands the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, adorned with 12th-century frescoes depicting scenes from the Virgin's life. These frescoes are considered masterpieces of medieval Georgian art.
"In the silence of the Vardzia caves, the voice of the Virgin Mary resonates louder than in any cathedral."
Ancient prayer of Vardzia
O Mother of God, who dwells in the caves of Vardzia with your faithful servants. You who protected Queen Tamar and her people, intercede for us before your Son Jesus. May your mantle cover us as the rock protects the monks of Vardzia. Amen.
